  • How to get veg oil in the tank

    Hi All,

So - at present the oil is going in the old fashioned way - pick up container, pour through funnel.

Has anyone got any tips for a bit of kit that would make it a bit easier? Don't fancy a mouthful of oil, so anyone used a good self priming siphon? Preferably a cheap one!

    All suggestions gratefully recieved!

After you've tipped up the container punch a hole in the top to let it drain nicely?

      Bottom?

Don't try this with a 5L bottle if you are nearing the Full mark....

Seriously though, when i had 3 litre bottle, I found with a bit of practise i could tip straight into the filler neck and then push the bottle against the filler neck to crumple the bottle at the same rate as the flow...ie no air required to enter the bottle.
Worked okay but you have to be quick and accurate with the initial tip... best to have a towel sat on the wheel to catch the drips.

Failing all the above, fill an old water tank with a lid in your bedroom, attach a hosepipe and stick a hoselock trigger gun on the end. leave dangling out your window. Job done.

Thing is...I'm usually using 20l tubs of oil, that's what makes it a bit tricky!

What type of oil are you guys using and what ratio to Diesel (if any?)

I've been running Biodiesel in mine, from a place in Edmonton: http://www.purefuels.co.uk/

That looks just the job actually - one on order now.

In the summer I use pretty much 100% veg oil, maybe a few litres of diesel just to keep the viscosity down.

In the winter I'm a bit more cautious - no more than 50/50.

If anything I'd say she runs even smoother on SVO than diesel!

If I was you I'd alternate with some deisel from time to time... the seals on the fuel pump don't like pure oil and dry out over time. then you get fuel leaking out everywhere...which is not good.
And we all have read the posts on repairing fuel pump seals....

I cut off the flexi spout from a Tesco funnel and glued it to an oil bottle lid with a hole cut in it. To allow air in I put a thin rubber tube inside the spout and long enough that when the spouted lid was screwed on to the oil bottle it reached near to the bottom.
It worked but I've always ended up going back to a funnel as its the quickest way I've found. Tying the funnel in place with a piece of string tied around the roof rack etc allows you to use two hands on the oil bottle if you prefer that.

Bods on the vegetableoildiesel forum have used transfer methods involving pressurising the veg container with a bicycle pump, sparklets bottles and other things so maybe have a look if you don't fine what you've ordered works for you.

I get my Mrs. to hold the funnel (makes her feel involved!), using a 20l can of KTC oil (I wouldn't actually like to eat anything cooked in it if it were to take on the taint of the oil).

Definitely runs smoother on SVO, I've had only diesel in it for the past two weeks, ouch. I run varying mixtures in there and so far so good.

The same method I use currently, but my other half hates it!

I have a bit of string on the handle of my funnel, it loops around the seat release knob on the back seat. Holds it all nice and steady while I pour the oil in.

Easy method is to get a flexi spout funnel (mine's a black £ shop jobbie), and a couple of large magnets. (i use a couple of recovered hard disk drive mags, but microwave oven mags will work as well)

Just hold the magnet inside the cup of the funnel and it will stick to the car body above the filler cap, and hold the funnel against the car bodywork.

Just make sure the magnet is bigger than the hole in the funnel, or you might end up with it going in your tank.

The second magnet goes on the outside of the funnel attracting the inner one and is just to hold the inner one in place when its not being used so i don't lose it.

Hands free oil filling, and the Mrs doesn't have to...er..hold my funnel!

I have been using one of these for the last few years.

                              http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/100-METHAN.../400147111823?

I fitted some hose onto the nossle and it only takes a couple of minutes to pump 25 ltr of oil into the tank.
