    Faulty fuel gauge?
What temperature is the engine running at now? if its too cold it'll use more fuel....as was said in the beginning you may have fried the engine temperature sensor, so that the pump is putting too much fuel in.
What have I told you about thinking Erroll

this is a good guess, after advised toyota was checking the stock for the cooling temp sensor. I did not ask to check if faulty, at the moment they think is not. maybe an option to test it, I hope to manage tomorrow.

Other mechanics did not find any fault, or leakage etc.
the engine runs perfectly, they say. "we can only try to change a part"

I found interesting this forum http://dahn.webcity.com.au/~toy49040...er=asc&start=0

The guy replaced pump, injectors and so on but the issue persisted.. until he replaced the cooling temp. sensor.
Perhaps mine has some fault on it but the light does not show.
I will update, thanks all for the help and comments for now

To make it clear, anyone know where is the coolant sensor? by the oil filter??
I spotted a white - dirty plug with a sensor..

apparently roughtrax just sell the gauge sender.. (std or spade):
              http://www.roughtrax4x4.com/?doc=16&cid=616&vid=947

is confusing, anyone know where are located, I believe only the coolant sensor effect the fuel quantity
I take it cooling temp is 89422-35010

there is another sensor at the front closer to the radiator ..I unplugged it and no engine light came up

That in your pic is the oil pressure sensor, the coolant temp sensor is slightly higher up, and in the block, not the oil cooler housing.

The thing you unpluged is just the temp gauge sensor.

                  Thanks TonyN, the greatest

so this is the oil sensor, it make sense.
Still having a hard time to see where my coolant temp is 89422-35010

                  I found it at http://www.gsfcarparts.com/
                  on http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...ht_1683wt_1199

This guy had great improvements by replacing it on a I gen 2.4td
interesting he also had no engine light on
                  http://dahn.webcity.com.au/~toy49040...ic.php?t=13955

maybe I need to remove the oil filter?
                  anyone has a picture??

                    anyone has a picture??

the mechanics could not see the coolant temp. sensor on my car how is that possible?
also the Toyota dealer could not see it.. only the temp gauge sender is there
                    (shown on prev. pic)

I just have a surf 3.0td ssrv ..any idea?

I have the feeling there is only a gauge sender for the water temp.
I don't know what else could cause the excessive fuel if there are no fuel leaks, water levels, smoke, vibrations, full performance as usual

                      I'll chuck it in here,
before i realised my gearbox was leaking and only ever driving round town, I wondered why my fuel consumption was getting worse and worse. Turned out it was because I was having to drive it a bit harder to get anywhere as there was so little oil in the auto 'box...
                      Still Can't believe I own a Hilux

There's an EGR Valve toward back of engine. Follow the hose from that down to a brown VSV. Look to the left of the end of the VSV for a grey (I think) plug. This is where you will find the coolant sensor.

This is the only pic I can find.

..thanks niftynew, sorry where exactly at the back f the engine and do you refer to the sensor of 2.4TD surf /your version or the 3.0TD?

Charwell, Tyres are about 2000m infinity - kumo, 16" 50-50 excelent grip on snow and dry and not noise.. perhaps will end up selling it?

Eddleston ty for your imput but I would exclude the gearbox as the issue occurred just after the car had the thermostat faulty causing overheat

No seems the 3.0 has no coolant sensor, only the gauge sender and that works after checked..
may not be the air sensor as when unplugged the colder air visibly decrease performance

just passed the MOT with emissions almost 1/2 the max so I don't know where the 40% more fuel she drinks is going and, is not leaking

Perhaps turbo sensor / recycling gas can effect consumption?
