          no the turbo didnt drag any bits of rag in.. and the truck has sinc been all the way to lincoln and kelso with no ill effects. It seems i may have got away with my temporary lapse in sanity...

          did i mention i have to do the cambelt next?

          anyways..aside from some minor arguments and disagreements ..thanks all for the help, and a happy new year to one and all ...

            ...not got the skills!

            Hi all,

            Sorry if hijacking this thread - I have the same issue on my 3.0 surf - small split in turbo return pipe and oil leak getting progressively worse. I have the parts from Roughtrax (Si136) but not the skills (i have fitted an ATF cooler and do the annual servicing but thats it!!)

            Not that you guys use garages to do your work, but how long do you think it would take a professional garage to do this job, given its a fiddly thing to replace? I cant put it off any longer.

            Anyone know a good garage familiar with Surfs in the Surrey/Hants area (Ash/Aldershot/Camberley) they can recommend??

                if you can service the truck and fit an atf cooler you can do this job.

                all you need are the sockets, and a good supply of extension bars. plus a jack and stands to get offside front wheel off.

                the way i did it was to remove everything from the top.

                note that the exhaust manifold studs have a "torx" end .. so you can seperate nut from stud.

                once air box and manifold nuts are off use the torx end on the studs to remove from head and the turbo to manifold flange. similarly with those holding turbo to exhaust at the triangular down pipe flange. and remove studs ..(two plus one bolt on down pipe)

                undo the two nuts holding the oil pipe to the turbo underneath.. access is much improved if you remove the wheel and the little panel in the wheel arch .. as you can see what youneed to undo clear as day. undo the brace bolt on the stud situated on underside of turbo.. again easy to see if you have the wheel off...

                eh voila manifold and turbo come off ...seperately and the turbo can be lifted up and out the engine bay. (you will also have to disconnect the water feed pipes and move a few bits out the way ...)

                The "book" says to fix oil pipe to turbo and refit the whole lot.. i didnt. I bolted oil pipe to block, and gently lowered turbo onto mounts and located the support brace underneath.

                It isnt a difficult job, is just takes time and patience, and a good awareness of where your socks may be at anyone time. A little tip that i have always used when fixing oil leaks is once things are bolted up spray a light coloured paint.. (i used white) over the joins you want to keep an eye on. then any leaks post reassembly are easier to spot. in the same way the inside of my bash guard is white) once the pipes back in place check oil and coolant levels refill if needed, (i lost a bit of coolant) and thats it. ..

                i videoed my work for the youtube channel i have so will post a link in this thread to that vid once published, it may help anyone who wishes to havea crack at this.

                I had all the tools, but an ordinary halfords large kit will suffice, though you may have to buy the torx sockets seperately. oh and theres a couple of bolts at the back of the exhaust manifold that i used a wratchet spanner with swivel head on to access.

                cost of tools ..not in excess of £200 and you havea head full of knowledge once the job done. I reckon a garge would charge more than that in labour as its at least a 4 hour job maybe more if any of the studs snap etc.

Link to YouTube vids would be great to look at while I go through your instructions again.I will print this off and have a run-through with eyes-on to better understand. As you say - will learn a lot if I can get it right, but its a confidence/time thing. Just have to convince the missus that I can do it (its her car and she uses it daily!)

                    No probs. putting video together tomorrow and I will try and include a list of tools used with sizes if I remember....if you are doing this job as a first timer i would lean towards giving yourself two clear days, one to strip and one to reassemble..simply so you arent rushed. plus if you have somewhere she can stand over night with the wheel off life is much simpler...

                        Hesh - thanks for the vid. I have no place to work on the truck apart from a grass verge on a slope, so looking at video i thought better of it. Very useful for anyone with better facilities than me tho!
                        Diezel Weazel - appreciate the link - Tony @ 4x4toys.co.uk sorted me out, and I took the opportunity for a full service and some other bits whilst he was at it. Tony - thanks very much for sorting this lot out so quickly. Also thanks to Baz at Roughtrax for identifying the source of the oil leak in the first place.
