  • speedo failure

Speedo died recently and O/D lamp flashing.

In line with advice on old threads, I have removed Vehicle Speed Sensor from transfer box and bench tested it with multimeter ..... ouput from terminal #3 is ranging from 0 to 0.7 ish Volts, as I move the white plastic cog.

An old thread advises that this should be 0 to 9V fluctuation but I am unclear whether a knackered VSS would only give out a zero reading, while any other output means it is working.

Also while bench testing, does the plastic cog need to be spun at a speed to test the voltage output or is it sufficient to just spin it through your fingers.

I haven't resorted to taking the clocks apart yet, as I don't want to waste effort if everything points to a faulty VSS. Can anyone advise me please??

Also, while removing the VSS from T/Case, about two 'eggcupfulls' of oily substance came out of the hole .... it was beige colour. I have read that some say Gearbox Oil and some say ATF should go into the T/Case.
I don't know what ATF looks like so I am not sure what I have in my T/Case. Do I need to top up/change the lubricant and if so where is the fill point for this please ??

Finally, if my VSS in knackered .... does anyone have one they could sell me?
(3.0L Auto KZN185 with 1KZ-TE engine if this matters).

    Thanks

Speedo still not working. Still keen to hear if anyone has one to sell please.

Meantime have today drained AT Fluid and also drained the Transfer Case.

ATF that came out was jet black (assume it was red once like the stuff I just put in), so obviously well overdue a change.

The stuff that came out T/Case was creamy brown colour and I assume that it was therefore gear oil? After reading as many threads as I could find across various sites, I have refilled T/Case with 80W-90 GL5 gear/diff oil.

However, on refilling and before even starting the engine, I have developed an oil leak from the T/Case that i never had before!!

It appears to be dripping from where the 'output shaft' leaves the T/Case (the one that connects to the front propshaft). There is obviously an oil seal problem here?

Any ideas on how easy this is to fix and also if parts are readily accessible?

Nick, I'm mostly replying so you don't feel like you're shouting into the wind. One of the grown ups will reply soon but they tend to look in general first because people just randomly post 90% of stuff up there.

New seals for the Tcase are available here:

      and here:

Yes, ATF should be a kind of wine red colour. Black is not good.

I would guess that the speed sensor would put out more volts as it goes faster, but I am just guessing. Lord Lucan or possibly TonyN should be able to get one for you if you need it.

Thanks Sancho - appreciate your advice.

I have spent most of tonight searching threads and it would appear that the ouput shaft seals can be replaced fairly easily while T/Case is in situ.

I see from your links that even original Toyota oil seals are cheap so I will also change the rear output shaft seal while I've got the case drained.

        Thanks again mate

Im not one of those grown ups that Sancho referred to but, Ill join in anyway. Your truck sounds as if it may have been a bit neglected, If your ATF was black and you changed it by simply dropping the sump content and refilling, you will only have replaced around 4.5 litres. Theres about 6 litres more of black stuff lurking in there, If I was you Id change it again after a few weeks and that way you dilute bad with good ,some more. Alternately you could ( and maybe already did ??) change it all using the two bucket method outlined somewhere in the forum. Everytime I change my engine oil, I drain my transmission and refill. Possibly a bit extreme but what the heck youre under the truck with basins anyway and it keeps it fresh,

Thanks Bogus - the 'two bucket' method might have to wait for a day when i've got more time on my hands (particularly to clean up the mess I will undoubtedly make!).

I knew the sump drain only did some of the ATF, but didn't know it left as much as 6L unchanged .... so the total volume of ATF in the box is 10.5L ?

I will redrain again in a few weeks although will shop around for ATF this time ... yesterday ran out of time and ended up buying 5L of Comma Multi Vehicle ATF from Halfrauds which cost me £30 .... seems that it can be found a lot cheaper than this based on previous threads.

            Cheers for advice
