  • Temperature Gauge moving

So after I fitted new head, water pump, rad, new coolant and burped the system, I am still getting a slight increase in temperature when climbing a hill say at 60 mph, its only a couple of millimetres increase nothing extreme and returns to half way mark very quickly also, so I am not too worried

but the cooling system should take 10 litres and I am still left with some coolant maybe around a litre or less possible between half a litre and a litre..
    in one of the bottles....

I have ran the heaters on hot both front and back heaters several times and the air is HOT without a doubt, I left rad cap off for two days squeezed all the hoses, it wont take anymore coolant?!

also fan is working fine too, truck runs great, idles great and temp sits bang in the middle at idle and normal cruising, just when climbing long hills for a few mins is where its happening,

does this happen to anyone else, I cant remember before the head cracked what sort of variance the needle had, but I am sure it sat bang in the middle rock solid no matter how hard I drove it?? true???

    Thanks guys.

I think a wee increase in temp on a climb would be normal on any car, but not usually noticeable on a Surf temp gauge which represents quite a few degrees range at that middle bit. For comfort why dont you fit an auxiliary temp gauge as others have done, and if you still think its verging on the high side during those climbs maybe think about fitting an ATF cooler ( if its an auto)

an aux temp gauge is a good idea! I guess it will help gave me info on the temp variance, I also changed the Thermostat but NOT the coolant temp sensor, maybe worth changing that also?

You'd be supprised how much the temp fluctuates with a digital temp gauge, my surf gauge never moves but the digital one ranges from 75 degrees to 90 degrees depending on gradient & load.

Worth while if your a bit uneasy with your surf & not that expensive.

If its not broke don't fix it.

I doubt the coolant sensor needs replaced. If its reading in the middle at normal running its fine. The Surf temp gauge is designed to not scare or stress you. Over a fairly big range which Toyota have decided is normal and OK, your gauge will hardly move from the middle. There is a mod that will make it more sensitive but it involves resistors and stuff . I still think an auxiliary gauge, preferably with a digital display is easier and better

Yep I thought so it should be quite solid in the middle, weird thing is I just took the dogs out and it moved a little going to a Loch (quite hilly) , and leaving there it p1ssed from the heavens so I blasted the heaters whill belting up a hill and it was solid never budged!?! I dont think I have driven it hard enough, been taking it a bit easy cos of all the work I done, didnt want anything snapping lol, but thanks for the info I am going to fit an aux gauge either way.

cool I thought it was ok as you say it is reading! so defo on the digital gauge and that will give me a good insight.

You sure a previous owner hasn't modded the gauge?

Mine is and can see clearly the hills on it.

I 99% sure it aint been mate, and the reason I am more sure now is it rained in a biblical proportion yesterday as you can see in the pic above, I blasted the heaters on hot cos I got soaked to the bone! (and yeh minutes early the weather was great as those pics were all taken within 20-30 mins)
and I was going up a STEEP hill at 60mph then another one and it never moved!? I am thinking still some air trapped some how??? unless the rain was keeping something cool?

Putting the heaters on will help keep it cooler as you're adding additional cooling air through the heater matrixes, so that probably countered any tendency for the temp to rise going up hill yesterday.

With my aux temp guage I can watch it rise by anything up to 15C going up hill, so a few points on yours isn't anything to worry about, so long as it cools back down quickly once the extra load is off the engine.

well that does make me feel better! and yeh it does cool really quickly when not under load, thanks Tallyman nice one!
