  • Dead Forever Help

    Hi All,

It is a sad day for me today, yesterday I was driving down the motorway and my 3rd Gen KZN185 died. Tried to accelerate but didn't go anywhere, then the engine cut out, wouldn't quite start up afterwards or if it did cut out almost straight away afterwards.

It got towed to a near by garage, they have done some fairly in depth but basic checks. Now they are talking about taking the cylinder head off to check pistons etc. The guy I spoke to told me that whatever they find isn't going to be good, looking like it will wind up being something like £1500 - £2000 + for the final repair, quite close to what I paid for it.

Would love to hear some suggestions as to what my options are, how much I can sell it for as parts and or as a project for someone to revive.

    Cheers

    Rob

    afternoon

the 3rd gens are normally strong trucks and it's unusal for it to just stop without any warning

if it didn't overheat and was running fine before this incident it may be something a lot simpler than the head.

If it turned over and almost ran then the cambelt is probably OK and if it wasn't overheating then cylinder head should also be OK.

My guess (and it's only a guess) is fuelling. Might be a busted diaphram in the primer pump or something as simple as a blocked fuel filter or fuel line

    best of luck

As above really.pump the fuel primer several times to see if it gets hard.f it don't then it's shagged. When was the filter last changed aswell as that may be clogged up if not changed often

        Hi Guys,

        Thanks for the replies.

I actually changed the fuel, oil and air filters the weekend just gone. It was working fine on Sunday and Monday.

There is fuel at the Injector at the injectors and the primer pumps until its hard, but still no cigar.

Checked the Timing Belt to see if it had jumped at all and it is fine.

I really don't want to have to pay the garage £1000+ to diagnose the engine, its just to much for me to spend on the truck. I have a friend who may well be able to take a look at the engine for me on the side.

        Cheers,

        Rob

can you get it up to me somehow? If its not making nasty noises its normally a fuel problem, at worst another pump.

there is lots to test before taking anything apart, and it shouldn't cost you any money either just to get an idea whats wrong, thats outragous. What have they tested? a compression test will tell if its mechanically sound, and just open a injector pipe joint to see if its getting fuel.

            Hi Tony,

            Thanks for posting.

I am happy to work out a way to get the motor to you mate. I think I would rather someone who knows about surfs took a look than just any old garage. Right now it is in Huntington which is near where the incident happened. I just moved to Cambridge area.

I am not completely sure what they have checked so far, they seem like a decent bunch of guys. But that doesn't count for anything if they are looking in the wrong places.

            Cheers,

            Rob

Tony, let me know if you think its worth me trying to arrange getting it over to you.

                  Appreciate your response.

                  Cheers,

well its tricky, you could pay a recovery firm, but obviously they charge, last time someone inquired it was about £1 a mile.

check your insurance, sometimes they cover delivery to a garage.

I'm not sure my whiny rear diff is up to collecting on a trailer that distance ATM.

Well he certainly knows his surfs plus if he can't find secondhand spares if needed who could?

I have faith, I think I will speak to the guys at the garage its at currently. I know they have a flat bed for towing, I will ask if they can and how much it would be for them to move it to Basingstoke.

I will keep you posted Tony.

                        Cheers,

As Tony has already said, if it didn't make any loud noises and the dash didn't light up like a Xmas tree before it stopped, then the chances are it's just fuel. If the cost of a tow truck is too much, ask them to do a compression check, this should rule out significant piston damage and as already said, loosening an injector pipe and then winding the truck over will test to see if fuel is being pumped. If you have just fitted a new fuel filter, it is possible this could be the problem. I fitted one to my own truck a couple of months back and then had loads of running problems until it was changed again. Good luck...

Get it to Tony. For the cost of a tow truck it is definitely worthwhile. I blew a head, and got the truck shipped to a local "4x4 specialist" who claimed to know all about Surfs. A week later they charged me £600 to get the engine out and tell me the head was bust. I am undecided whether they were crooks or morons. Tony will a) tell you exactly what is wrong; b) tell you honestly whether it is worth sorting and what it will cost; c) do it very reasonably indeed. He is also a thoroughly good bloke, and he has a very funny looking cock...

                              Haha, cheers guys.

I am going to speak with the Garage today and see if they can carry it down to Basingstoke for me.

Given Tony's highly regarded reputation on here, I would much rather spend the money getting the truck to him and know that I am not going to get ripped off or spend a load of cash for no reason.

I will keep you guys posted.

                              Thanks to everyone for contributing.
