  • Headlight Removal

I have read a few articles on the forum relating to headlight removal but always found it difficult to locate the botton grill attachments so I did mine today and took photos. Hope this helps.

This pic shows the locations of the grill attachment points. Top ones are easy to get at with the bonnet up but the bottom ones are a little bit fiddley as they are hidden between the bottom of the grill and the top of the bumper. Just use a long thin screw driver to get at the two center ones...they are about 4" back and the outer ones, under the headlights, are a bit easier.

Firstly remove the side lights. Unscrew the two self tappers and ease the side light forwards and off. The sidelights have to come off as they have two tabs top and bottom which locate into the sides of the grill.

Then go round the 11 attachment points shown above and release the little black connectors. Now I know you want to be careful and try not to break them but Ive read so many times on the forum its virtually impossible to remove them without breaking the little tikes! so I didn't bother.... I just jabbed and poked them until they broke. Live with it and cable tie the grill back on at the end. Or buy new ones from Toyota. Heres a pic of the top ones.

I tell lies......Here's one black clip intact

And here it is broken...told ya.

    and one under the H/Light

Once grill is off remove 4 x 10mm bolts to remove headlamp, unclip connector to bulb and fit new unit.

When removing the headlight I found it was attached in one corner by an alingment spigot. Just give it a sharp tug and it will come out.

Fit grill back on and secure with cable ties as shown. Refit side lights and dont forget to check the headlight beam alingment. The replaced h/light beam was way higher so I adjusted it by the adjustment screws on the h/light unit. (Blue arrow)

    job done.

Thanks mate. Pictures are worth a thousand words. Its and easy job and the location of the horns are accessible once grill is off. I didn't even know they were there until this job.

Andrew, spot on with the photos, my grill may be slightly different ,mine seems to have eleven fasteners. The easy way to remove them is to gently twist them through 90 degrees and they just pop out.On reinstallation I only used four, the ones just inboard of the headlights, you dont need the others as the sidelights hold them in,I drilled holes in the long mounting brackets so the clips could be seen from above and using a long screwdriver are easy to remove.Below the drivers side headlamp is a good place to fit air horns. If you are desparate for clips, email me and I will send you some, regards,Alan

Hey Alan..thanks for the comments and youre right there are 11 clips. I will alter the write up to reflect this. I did actually try the twisting 90 degrees and as you say ....thats the best way to get them out. I did also save 3 clips which I used on the bottom row as the cable ties secure the top with the sidelights holding the sides only. Thanks for your offer to send some clips but its pretty secure at the mo.

i found it alot easier to go in from the back. Remove the battery and the screenwash reservoir. Alot less frustrating!

serbsma... I was removing the headlight complete, had a stone chip in it, so it was not just the headlight bulb but the whole unit.

I replaced all my clips and even putting it back on broke a few.

This is the one and only part of my car that makes me scream with rage. Such a pain to remove, mine is a complete SOB to get over the bumper- the car has no signs of accidents which could put the bumper out of alignment.

I'll look for some cable ties that can be undone in the meantime I pray I don't have to change a bulb anywhere....

Mike, how do.When I put my grill back I only used four of the clips, top and bottom the second one in at each end,all the others I got rid of as the side lights hold the grill at each end so it cant fall out.The four I used are the ones just inboard of the headlamp units,it also gives you one or two spare clips just in case
