Work and other stuff means that I probably won't get another chance to work on it til the weekend, but atleast I'll then have four days to p1ss about with it.......

OK...... I don't wanna count my chickens, but I think I may be onto somethin......
After spending a large chunk of the weekend p1ss1ng about with various things I read back through the post to see if there was anything I'd missed.....
I found NiftyNev's suggestion about disconnecting the upper vac hose to the "UFO shaped thingy" on the Venturi assy. I'd already tried this without success but decided to try some of the other hoses instead.....
The first was the lower hose to the same UFO thing. I disconnected it and plugged the vac hose with a screw driver.......
AND THE ###### BEAUTY HASN'T STALLED SINCE!!!!
Bearing in mind she was stopping every 200 yds earlier today, but with the vac hose disconnected and plugged I've managed to drive 10 miles and for over 20 minutes without a hitch.
I know its early days and there may yet be an underlying problem, but things are looking pretty promising at the mo and according to this thread on the Aussie Surf site (with numerous contributions from the aforementioned Nifty ) there doesn't seem to be any harm in disconnecting this component and running without it....... http://www.toyotasurf.asn.au/forum/viewtopic.php?t=9859

It's possible but I never touched them until after the problem 1st started happening and certainly haven't swapped them over (I only ever disconnect them one at a time since learning the hard way on a Volvo T5)
So if they are wrong, they've been like it since we owned the car (and judging by the state it was in, for a long time before that).
Not quite. Yes it will run and not harm the engine with this hose plugged but..... you may now have a rougher engine shutdown. This is not good for the engine mounts but will not destroy them in a hurry.
Can you post a few pics of your vacuum hoses. I may be able to see the problem.

Since disconnecting it, I've noticed absolutely no difference in engine shut down (no shuddering or overrun), which might suggest that this bugger wasn't doing its job anyway.
Either way, everything is now running normally. She got through her MOT today with nothing but a couple of advisories and I can now start thinking again about the jobs I was going to do to improve the beast.......
Thank you to everyone who contributed to this thread..... hopefully anyone who has a similar problem in the future will stumble across it and even if the solution isn't the same as mine the advice in the thread should help to point them in the right direction.

The UFO thingy everyone is confused about is the Vaccuum driver for the EGR. ( Exhaust Gas Recirculator (I Think))
This basically is something the Japs need to lower the NOX emmisions, It feeds some exhaust gas back into the inlet manifold which has the effect of cooling the the exhaust gases (As I understand it).
It is the reason Surfs smoke quite badly on acceleration. (it also causes hot spots in the inlet manifold and head on one side)
You only need to block the Vac hose, usually with a ball bearing to stop it working.
In the UK we do not check the NOX emmisions so this part is not needed and is best blocked off.
If you ever take your head off you can go the whole hog and remove all the metal pipework completely, as long as you block the ports off with metal plates.
You may be able to do it without removing the head but it is not easy.
I put a bearing in mine the same day I bought it, did the same on a 2.4 I had before.
Be carful when you go after that little filter behind the fuel temp sensor, 1, it is easy to knacker the sensor and 2, the little barrel filter gets stuck and has to be pulled out, it is easy to poke a hole in it cuz you cant see what you are doing down there. But cleaning it is worth while.
Another thing worth doing is blowing back down the fuel line into the tank to clear any crud that might be blocking the strainer in the tank. (there is no pump down there)
