Hilux 3td auto 4x4 problem

sorry mate are you pushing the button and trying to stick shift it in to 4WD? if you are this could be your problem. I does sound like its not engaged, does the truck move forward in gear?

for the normal 4x4 i dont move the stick but just poress teh button. for 4x4l i move the stick away from me past the neutral position withthe button pressed.

The car does move forward in either of the settings but laso makes the "gear, no clutch" whining noise and the traction only comes from the rear wheels.

also turning the wheels even in the normal 4x4 mode makes that diff noise.

Mine was making a rattling noise like this and turned out to be the outer CV joint. There were no bearkings left in it so it was just spinning and not actually driving the wheel. That would account for your lack of drive to the front wheels. A new (from a breaker) drive shaft sorted it.

thanks for that! I will keep that in mind, the cv joints definitely need replacing, i know that for a fact.
