Hi Mate.
Just downloaded several sets of codes, also found a manual of sorts but nothing in it says that the engine wont start if the eng light is on.
Will try the fault codes tomorrow or I may just do a reset on them and see if anything changes, if there is still a fault it should save them again straight away.
Got my batteries on charge again at present, it does not take long to flatten them and they are fairly new, good job there is two of em.

I have actually switched it to my veggie tank (pump disconnected) which feeds to a swirl tank which is fitted near the brake servo. This is open to normal air pressure and normally the injector pump has only to suck fuel along about 3ft of tube.
I have filled this tank with neat derv so there is no chance of any problems getting fuel in. Still dont start though.
Will try the codes tomorrow.

Put the fuel system back to stock, i.e: feeding from the original tank, filter etc, and test from there. Is the fuel filter properly primed? Also, with it being the 3litre and you mentioning that the previous filters were gunged up, have you checked the little thimble filter in the injector pump itself, to make sure that isn't clogged?

This thread makes mention of it, even though it's not the thread I was looking for:

The engine was running on the stock tank system when it went wrong (running derv).
I only switched to the swirl tank this afternoon cuz I was running out of options and needed to know that there was'nt a blockage in the normal fuel line.
I too would like to know where this thimble is cuz I have'nt inspected that.

I take your point Matt but I figured a little tank holding a litre and a half of derv and about 3 foot of pipe going straight into the injector was about as simple a system as you could get.
Anyway it still dont start.
Going to look for that thimble tomorrow and also reset the ecu memory just in case it got really confused when the turbo decided to take off.
Thanks for your help though it is much appreciated.
Will report again tomorrow.

Spent all morning trying to find the diagnostic plug also that thimble but gave up in the end. I disconnected the batteries for 30mins but it made no diff.
I have found that there is no power to the cutoff solenoid at back of the injector pump and despite checking all the fuses I can find I see no obvious reason. At least I think that is the cutoff solenoid.
Anyone got a link to a picture of the injector pump so I can see what the various bits are.
does anyone know how and from where the solenoid gets its power. Is it direct from the ignition via? or from the ECU.
I am sure this is the reason it wont start.
I took No1 injector out and coupled it to its pipe then turned the engine over on the starter but nothing came out of the injector so it must be the solenoid.
Plenty of fuel came out of the pump when I removed the waste pipe fittings looking for the thimble.

Finally found the diagnostic plug, I was looking inside the cab and looking for a much bigger unit than the one I found under the bonnet.
I did the paperclip bit and monitored the light but it just flashes continuously quite fast less than a second between flashes.
Not sure if that means anything.
This afternoon I connected a battery to the spill solenoid (the big one at the back of the injector) and cranked the car.... it started briefly then died in a big cloud of black smoke. tried this a couple of times with the same result. This is probably correct since there was no timing involved in my connection.
So all I need to know is what drives the spill solenoid, presumably the ECU and are there any sensors anywhere that would stop this solenoid being powered.
The other option is that the ECU is shot, anyone got a spare one I can borrow to try and possibly purchase if mine really is shot????

Still Dead Kz-Te 130
Hi Guy's
I am still fighting a loosing battle, still unable to get my beast to fire up.
Today I put a scope on the Spill Control Solenoid and cranked the engine and there are good solid pulses to this unit, so my original thought that it was'nt being driven may have been wrong.
I also scoped the NE signal which is basically the engine speed sensor generated in the injector pump and is used by the ECU to time the Spill Control Valve... This is generating pulses as per diagrams in http://www.showmesome.info/hilux/info/manuals/1KZ-TE/
I did short the Spill Valve signal from the ECU to ground and crank the engine, it fired a bit out of control and died in white smoke, but at least it fired.
I noticed when I am trying to start the engine normally there is a faint whiff of exhaust and a slight trace black smoke out of the exhaust but no sign of a fireup.
I thought a timing problem.
I finally found that little filter at the back of the Fuel Temperature Sensor, which needed much cleaning but still wont start.
As I said before cracking an injector and cranking does'nt produce any fuel at the injector so that sort of says its not a timing fault.
I am actively looking for an ECU but no luck as yet do you think I have anything to gain by removing the injector pump and having a look inside it????
regards John
