How to remove the speedo dial

    Just prise out the little rubber bung from the clear plastic cover and poke something through the hole to press the reset button.

      If the speedo cluster is removed the T-belt light comes on just as a precautionary measure mate.

      In case you did a sh!t load of miles with the speedo out etc.

      just press the reset button (instructions above in Bushwhackers post)

      Keep a note of the mileage you reset it at. When you reset it, It wont come on at the time it should do. intervals are every 100k

        Hi Marshman... I've been following some of yours posts regarding your speedo, and I know you changed and tested all kinds of things... am I right in assuming it was the speedo clock all the time or was it the sensor as well????
        I have the same problem as you but was waiting to see if you found a simple common fault.. there seems to be loads of threads with people giving advice on 10 different things it could be.. but nobody seems to say what it usually is... toyota have a fantastic reputation for reliability but as we all know things break, but it just seems strange that something as basic as a speedo would have a list as long as your arm that could go wrong with it... I might believe it of a fiat but not a toyota...

          Hi Chris,

          I believe the miles to KM conversion chip at the back of the speedo had also gone, as I had tried a new clock and the speedo still didn't work with the chip in place.

          Once I had taken out the chip and fitted a new speedo it worked fine.

          Although since I have been taking so much apart to try and resolve, i did find the problem with the original speedo and I have fixed that one and running with it for now, fingers crossed, I may not need to get a new one yet as I have sent the replacement speedo back as the pin was stuck on 7Miles/hour.

          The problem I found on the original speedo was on the circuit board at the back of the speedo, where the connection between 2 points had burned out (assuming because of the chip). Used a small piece of wire and soldiered it back in and all ok so far.

          Sorry, didn't take a picture. If you are familar with the back of the speedo, there is about 4 or 5 little bolts at the back that hold the speedo dial to the white plastic case. Once the speedo dial was off I was able to see the issue straignt away.

          Hope this helps.

          Also if you know of anybody wanting a speed sensor, I have one going cheap and is has been tested and is working fine.

            Marshman thanks for the reply... sorry I havn't replied sooner but I've been away.... I think you have answered what I always suspected... ie. it's the speedo all along... Out of the factory everything is hunky dorri, but once you have had a hairy ar*ed importer soldering bits on or changing dials; after a while , it all goes a bit pete tong... I'm going to change my speedo for a 4runner one from a breakers yard and I bet that will solve the problem... Thanks again Marshman... and for any one else who has a similar problem i'll post a thread on how I got on with a direct 4runner replacement speedo...
