    hello guys
i was looking on an ausi surf site and there was a artical on having the rad modified (new base fitted so that gearbox oil cooler does not restrict water flow) he says temp gauge never goes above half way even in soft sand.does anybody know who does rad mods in uk. i will find link for ausi site its very interesting.

You could always change your rad for a manual gearbox version and fit a stand alone transmission cooler.

The thermostat restricts coolant flow far more than that ever could.

The benefit of that mod is not so much the better flow in the radiator, more the fact that you are no longer pouring heat into the coolant system from the gearbox.

Look for rad specialists, I had mine done, removed bottom tank fabd up a new one changed the internal atf cooler for a LR v8 one I think it was out of the way of the oulet...has run nice and cool since

            rad mod

            cheers guys
one problem with just runing external oil cooler is that on a cool morning the box needs water temp to get box oil to corect temp, other wise it would not want to change gear. you can run one inline from box to rad but not on return apparently. i find when towing or climing long hills, the turbo is always boosting (around 3000rmp) the temp shoots up in a matter of seconds. thank for help guys.

fatfires do you have any pics or more info for the rad mod.sounds good.

Which is exactly why I always suggest people do it correctly and fit a thermostatic valve for switching the flow through the external cooler.

Fitting one between the box outlet and the rad means you take the heat out of the ATF before it goes into the coolant, and then the coolant heats it up to the correct temp before it goes back to the box. Bobs yeruncle, bishbashbosh, everybody's happy.

Except for the fact that the rad bottom may not be at optimal temp for the ATF fluid. No matter which way you look at it, straight through a cooler ain't the optimal option.

Toyota must think its close enough to optimal.

For cooling it, yes, not for heating it up once overcooled.

                          I do Matt!

Had a Mocal wax stat in for a couple of months now and it works well.

Quickly gets ups to 80 degrees c then lets the flow through the transmission cooler. Even worked in Snowdonia hauling a large twin axle caravan.

On short runs it doesn't get hot enough to open! The average transmission temps are from 50 degrees c to 80 degrees c. Which I believe are optimum temps for the trans oil.

Now all I have to do Is to get a new rad to replace my leaky original/modded 4 core piece of carp (which I have bypassed the inbuilt trans cooler). Its a shame tho, as It's had a really nice top tank manufactured out of sheet brass. The original bottom tank is about as robust as a tea bag!

Might look again at an aluminium one (funds permitting).

Very few motor manufacturers will recommend using fish as heat exchangers

Sounds like you could do the opersite of what I did, if you got a good top tank (the known weak spot) and you are going to have a new core anyway, why not have a new bottom tank made upand re core the rest....at least you know what you got then!
I personally dont like alli rads, I believe with all the different metals in the system alli being the softest it can become the sacrificial metal if electrolosis were to occur, a non zink brass would be far superior
