would low oil preasure cause overheating? coming back from cornwall yesterday i noticed the temp gauge going up on all the hills under acceleration. the oil preasure gauge is just below the line and when accelerating it moves to just above the line, but the temp gauge carrys on creeping up. once you ease off the gas it goes down and sits below the line again. when i got a chance i pull over and checked for water. the exspansion bottle was full and bubbling like mad, took the rad cap off and had to fill with 2 litres of water. it's had fresh oil and a new filter put in it, 2 days ago. i'm guessing it's not the cooling system, but the oil system that is causing the heating problem. is the oil pump is on it's way out? or what else could it be?

    suggestion welcome

it's more likely the other way round, the engine running hot thins the oil hence the pressure drops, and loses a bit of lubrication, causing the engine to run hotter, viscious cycle, or at least that's how it works in my head.

Have you just changed from mineral oil to semi synth? What's your oil level like now? Have you used excessive oil? Is it noticably more rattley/tappy on a cold start today?

i put 10w40 semi synth in. oil level is at the full mark from cold. it's not more ratterly, but there is a nosise, when you rev it to 2000-2500 rpm like something is starting to break up.

checked the water and the exspansion bottle was still full, had to top another 2 ltrs via rad.

Can Uncle Tony take a look (sooner rather than later)?

I have to say Neil, and I REALLY hope I am wrong, but there's something familiar about this

nope, i fill it up from the rad.

also i think it might have something to do with the rad cap, as i went out last night ragged it, got back checked the engine and could hear a hissing coming from the rad cap.

don't think it's the head as it has'nt got hot since

can't see it being the head as it's never gone into the red, only up near it

                        update

just taken it for a spin. it's not lost anymore water and it's not getting hot. so whatever is causing it, is only doing it on long hillie journeys.

When did you last flush the system out ?? You may be starting to clog the rad with sediment. This is usually ok on short run's, But would show up if the engines working hard. Dont forget to remove the thermostat before flushing and open all the heaters to full on.
IT's not how you get in it . IT's how you get out.
