  • Can you solve this?

    My car starts fine.......sometimes.
It cranks first go and starts 99% of time but sometimes I turn the key and......nothing.
Not even a click, no effort from starter.
Foot on brake, in and out of gear (it's an auto) try again, nothing, repeat.

sometimes 5 or 6 goes and then whoosh, she starts as easily as she usually does.

I was thinking it might have something to do with a sensor on the gearbox picking up a bad signal or no signal. can you help?
    Alan

i would be 99% sure its the starter, check your connections, especially the earth,if it has a bad earth when u turn the key the ring geear in the starter wont drop into place, and u get nothing at the key,and can be intermittant(or however u spell it lol)

cheers. it's very very intermittant but I did notice my leaking steering pump is peeing fluid onto the battery to starter cable.

        I'll get under tomorrow.

Sounds like the starter motor solenoid is either sticking or going. Try whacking the starter motor with a crowbar, krooklock, etc. I used to have the same problem on a Morris Marina. A good hard poke with the end of something heavy will sometimes do the trick but only if the solenoid is sticking. If it's on its way out, banging will make no difference and you'll need a new starter motor.

have a look at the sterter relay, close to the o/s battery, these little tinkers can cause you no end of problems
            Non intercooled nothing.

I have had this caused by a dead cell in the battery. Get them checked as well.

I had a similar problem which turned out to be the starter motor..Just after that, my batteries failed, and was told that ailing batteries were very good at wearing starters out prematurely..

The repair kits are available from Roughtrax, but, it would seem the neccessary parts are AS cheap from Toyota, and the genuine article of course..The removal of the starter motor is the biggest bug bear, but it WILL come out eventually..

I couldn't hear much in the way of a "click" until it got really bad..I've had ignition barrel issues, and a dry cell..your's DOES sound like the starter..I'd look there first.

would I still get all the dash lights if my ignition barrel was dodgy?

I had a similar problem and it was an intermittent fault in the immobiliser.

It was disconnected for a week and I had no problems, so it was replaced and all has been well since.

It IS, without a shadow of doubt the starter motor contacts. A pair of contacts in the solenoid plunger assembly. As others have said, buy the repair kit from Roughtrax. It WILL solve your problem.

It's 'common fault number one' on these trucks.
