  • rear window prob on my new 4 runner

finally got the new 4 runner and love it, unfortunately so does the wife and she is tuzzing me to let her have it and she is prepared to get rid of her 206cc thats how much she likes it. It will be far more practical for the tracks up to the stables. So I had better start looking for a 3rd gen aswell!!

    I digress

The 4 runner has full Toyota s/h with all the paperwork and feels so positive. However the two known faults when I brought it are the rear window and sunroof not working and would welcome your advice:

    1) Rear window - motor works, all greased up but stalls/misses gears at certain points. On inspection looks like crescent shaped gear the motor drives has badly worn teeth. Not had motor off but is it fair to say the drive gear on the motor is likely to be poor?

    a) Am I right in thinking that the gear mechanism is refered to as the regulator and if so would it be best to change the motor as well.

    b) How easy is it to change the regulator. Does the glass need to come out and if so how is this fixed (all looked a bit corroded around the base of the glass!)

    c) Where would you source a replacement from (milners = £200+ for motor and regulator)?

    2) Sun Roof - motor works but no action. Have remove glass and one side of the slider is fixed the other slides up and down freely. Is it worth attempting a fix (no air con so could do with extra vent) and is it straight forward. Again where would you get parts from?

These questions have probably been asked before but if you could point me in the right direction it would be much appreciated.

Also Service Intervals - the book has intermediate oil changes done at 4500. Does the oil filter need to be changed at this one?
Would you recommend continuing at 4500 or stretch to 6000?

Normal oil - semi synthetic - fully synthetic **** which one and what effect would this have on oil/filter change intervals. is the extra cost worth it. The receipts indicate a Shell oil has been used, any problems deviating from this?

I do about 10- 12k a year so bi-annual servicing shouldn't be too much of a problem however it is the end of those main dealer stamps in the book!!

possibility but you wont know till its out to check

if the regulator is being changed then if the motor is worn then just as well do it at the same time.

    b) How easy is it to change the regulator. Does the glass need to come out and if so how is this fixed (all looked a bit corroded around the base of the glass!)
the regulator will come out seperate from the glass as its got small wheels on it that fit into runners

    c) Where would you source a replacement from (milners = £200+ for motor and regulator)?
Put a post up in the parts wanted section or try on ebay. You can get a good second one from either of these

I try to do my oil change at 3-3500 and the filter every 6-7000

    Semi synth

fitted new regulator and motor last night, works like a dream.

manty thanks to Bushwacker for dropping off motor. It was "as new" as you described.

Old motor drive gear all over the place and had chunks missing. The regulator had sections where all teeth had gone.

Interestingly there was a quote from Toyota on the last service invoice to replace the motor only at a cost of around £360 inc. Cost me £100 plus 1hr labour start to finish - cool! even found the disconnected heated window terminal so hopefully that should work too.

Now then - who has any ideas about the sun roof sorry MOON ROOF?

motor runs, one side runner is locked in position the other runs up and down the channel freely but with glass in position nothing moves. Are these driven from wires working off a gear. How easy is it to gain access and are there any outlets for spares?

Does the 2nd moon roof tilt and slide or just slide?

      cheers

Just slides, the mech is a bugger to get out, you need to take the headlining out, then it comes out in one unit. To be honest if your A/C works and it dosn't leak, probably best to leave it alone.

The motor is at the front, above the rear view mirror, its geared and drives cables to pull/push the sunroof. I'd guess one side has jammed and broken

my guess too and to be honest was thinking about leaving it alone too but what AC? Unfortunately I think because its a 4 runner it doesn't have any.

            Can AC be retro-fitted?

If the sunroof doesn't tilt then probably not as usefull as it could be.

Should I fit wind deflectors to front windows ie are they an easy fit and do and do they allow windows to be open without too much wind noise?

Bushwacker - yes love it and a bargain so well happy belongs I can stop the wife pinching it over the 206cc. The oldest car I have owned for a while and one of the most enjoyable to drive. There is definately something about them. Whether its the feeling of robustness, versatility, presence, "its a proper truck"

Gives me an idea for a new thread!

Sorry, forgot you had a 4Runner! IMHO wind deflectors arn't really any quieter than just windows open, maybe a little, but they are best for letting you have the window open a couple of inches even if its peeing with rain, and you don't get blown around so much in the car.
