  • intercooler & spring lift

ive decided to keep the 3 ltr another year cos i cant afford a 3rd gen
so i was thinking of spoiling her a bit

ive seen the front mounted intercooler on eblag for £95
but then when reading here ive seen people knock it for the top mounted version

also im considering new rear springs because the cheepo £40 "normal" springs i fitted when i had my head done are now just like the old ones were

my suspension switch works and i do use it often on the motorway to stabalise(sp) the ride which does get twitchy at 85
i do find the ride a bit hard no matter what mode im in with hard being very hard

i have the fuel cat combo fitted on the bulkhead where the chasis plate is so am not too sure about top mounting the intercooler and to be honest i dont want to cut a scoop into the bonnet

so my main questions are (suspension)

1; if i go for new 2" lift springs do i need the shockers?
2; do i also need the front tortion bars (springs or whatever they are called lol)
3 ; if i go for the procomp kit with everything in it ie- 2 springs 4 shox 2 front bars etc(or kit like it) what ride will i get will it be rough or spongy? as most of my driving is a/b/motorways with a swing off road every blue moon
4 ; would i have to alter anything else? ie- load sensing valve, brake pipes or wireing etc?

    intercooler

1 ; is it worth fitting one in the first place as the one on eblag (front mounted) can be fitted for around £200 all in + fitting i get to this figure by thinking £95 for cooler and i suppose £100 for pipes etc???
    will it make a difference?
will it give me better fuel economy and extra power at the same time or will i just use up the fuel saving by using the power?
2 ; the picture on the net for the one on eblag shows it mounted but the number plate looks like it will blank the air out and along with the pipes running up both sides of the engine (i presume) would that not make the air hot again?
3 ; if i went for top mounting is this way cheeper? and would i have to start cutting big holes for scoops

as always cheers for any answers

SORRY MODS please feel free to move if in wrong place

Hi Shaggy. If your nort off roading then just go for the +2" springs and don't bother with the rest of the stuff. You can get away with keeping the original shocks but don't bother with the torsion bar replacement as they are a pig to fit so i found . Just crank the front bars up 1.5" and you will get the front to sit about the same hieght as the rear.I had the roughtrax +2" kit and and it only lifted 1.5" total.you won't need to touch anything else if you jst do the 2" lift with the springs

      thanks for the info matey
so if i just buy a set of heavy duty rear springs (as they are all +2"?) then its just a case of winding up the front bars im happy with that lol lol

any info on the intercooler mate?

i've no ideas on that i'm afraid but if you do a search for thelovelyboyo he done a good thread on the intercooler mod

Just make sure the springs are the lift springs when ordering.

Like the look of the new site.I only went on yesterday which was the 1st time since the change over

With regards to the intercooler mate, It will use more fuel! It makes the air less dense so = more air into the engine. bigger bang! more ommph! but of course with this extra air it will use extra fuel! You might find your not "ragging" it anymore (if indeed you even do) so might save pennies on fuel by not accelerating as long! (perhaps)

The problem with the ebay one is the amount of pipe needed! its a long way to the front of the engine, down to the lower valance and then all the way back up again!! It just screams turbo lag!

Personally i would avoid the ebay intercooler! If your really desperate for an intercooler top mount really is by far the best way to achieve the results your after!

AAANNNNNDDD if you dont have at least the 1.5" body lift fitting an intercooler on top of the engine might be a complete no no anyway!

so...to round up! I think the ebay one will not be worth bothering with! I think the extra power will be pointless when it takes a month before the compressed air even enters the engine!

How long did the springs last as it sounds like the springs i have got a few month ago! Did you do much work with it I.e putting heavy loads in the back of your truck or was it just regular usage ??

Agree with pretty much all of the above. My fuel economy is the same but noticably more torque available.

The ebay cooler looks good but the silicone hoses are very expensive and if you buy cheap you will be sorry. A front mount is more efficient at cooling than a top mount but I think this gain is lost by the length of the pipe runs. And if you are off roading then a front mount would get blocked with mud and crud.

ps - cooled air is denser hence gets you more oxygen into the cylinder.

                      cheers boys
so an intercooler is not an option then without a lift

just to note with regards the springs
i measured them today from the top of my rim to the arch
i have 16" wheels if that makes a difference

                      heres what i have
                      front n/s 13 1/8th inches
                      front o/s 13 inch dead

                      rear n/s 12 1/4 inches
                      rear o/s 12 inch dead

so that is poor me thinks lol
spoken to roughtrax today and she said
"the normal 20% stronger springs are what you want because if you get the raised by 2" springs you need shockers and they only come in a kit not seperate so you have to have the tortion bars as well "
i asked if i bought the 2" lift kit that in theory would lift my saggy back end by four inch ie 2" ive sagged and 2" lift she said
"no the shockers lift the car"
now im puzzled because she says the rear stronger springs will lift the back end 2" but the 2" lift springs in the kit needs the shox to lift
im calling back tommorow when they guy is back in to ask him some questions
but by the sounds of it i cant lift the back end without shox

well i got them this time last year from milners for about £40
i got 2 springs the same length and to be honest i never checked them because stevo changed them for me when he put me a new head on
i rang milners today and they were not interested to be honest is all i got was "oh im sorry your not happy but thats all we do and we have not had any complaints"
so milners wont get another penny from me again!!
i thought they were good but to be honest you get what you pay for dont you?

No need to change the shocks if you're only fitting 2" or 20% uprated 'lift' springs.
The uprated springs will lift the rear of the truck back up to standard height, but will be firmer.
Shocks don't do any of the lifting, the springs do.

                            but lol
the springs that are used for a suspention lift need shox so would they in theroy lift my car 4 inches? because its sagging 2 inch now is it not
or as usual have i got it completely wrong

Probably 4" from where it is now, but only 2" from factory height, so you'll get away with using your standard shocks. For off roading though you better get +2" shocks.
