P.S. regarding oil quality, i think using the cheapest oil you can is a bit of a false economy because you could be reducing the life of your engine. Its a very important component of any engine, especially a turbocharged engine and needs to be a decent quality IMO and will probably not need changing as often if you buy decent stuff.

Top man. I won't need to go into preacher mode. I personally use
the Comma oils. Some use the diesel lite 15/40, I use either the XT2000 15/40
or the Eurolite 10/40. Those latter two can be used in either petrol or diesel.
All of them are semi-synth.

How do you remove the oil filter, is it clockwise or anti-clockwise??
What's the best method of filter removal?
Bushwacker - you naughty boy!
I never bother changing the filter - I've had the truck for 120,000k's and it uses that much oil the filter rarely sees any!
So I just shove veggie oil in the tank and the sump - saves on spares and gives a really nice smell !

which, as I say is fine for a slow reving diesel engine pushing 200,000km.
Due to the nature of a diesel engine it is far more important that you change the oil/filter regularly. Your diesel engine oil carries a heap of contaminents and muck which can damage the engine (whether it's a quality oil or not). You can't buy expensive oil and think that because it's better quality you can leave it in longer.
Now- if I had a Ferrari capable of 12,000 rpm then I'd put something better in the engine! Still it's your money and your engine.Last edited by laser_jock@work; 1 December 2006, 15:30._________________

Why do you think there is such a short service interval on this engine? Its because its turbocharged; this places a much greater demand on the oil, breaking it down and reducing its ability to lubricate effectively across a range of temperatures.
If you start out with a poor quality oil, then you futher reduce the effectiveness and will probably shorten the required service interval even further!
Like you say, its your engine...
Cheers, Paul.

Must say, though, that Carlube stuff that Neville is using is supposed to be
a decent brand. Ne'er tried it myself, but from what I've heard, it's not half
bad.
Still can't understand the concept of not looking after an engine just because
it's high mileage or non performance vehicle based, though. I do the same and
replace the oil around every 3 to 4 months, or 2k to 3k, which I know is overkill,
but neither will the engine suffer for it.Last edited by MattF; 1 December 2006, 17:17.

I add oil to keep it at full on the dip stick.
I change the oil and filter about 4 times a year.
I use good oil and the proper filter.Another member of the 'A' team

there should be no problem even if it cost less. If its good enough for Toyota its good enough for me no matter how cheap.Trust your Hound.
