  • Best oil to use for engine?

    Hi guys,

I'm gonna change the oil/oil filter this weekend, whats the best quality oil to use in these engines?

Can you pick up an oil filter from halfrauds, or is it more specialised?

    Cheers, Paul.

Semi syn oil and you will better off and cheaper to get your filters from milners or roughtrax.
Halfords filter was nearly £16 i think it was when i last looked

If you order the filter kit (oil, air & fuel) from Milners they will knock you some cash off the oil (I use 15w40 semi synth & change every 5000 miles

Being a pedant I know, but I always prefer to go with a known quality
filter. Mann or Mahle would be my two of choice, Unipart third. No they
        aren't cheap, but.........

How do you remove the oil filter, is it clockwise or anti-clockwise??

Buy the cheapest Turbo diesel oil you can get (£3.99 5L at Adsa) and Milner filters (buy 5 or so in one go). If you change oil and filter every 5000Km like you're supposed to, putting in expensive synthetic won't make any difference (other than to your wallet).

I certainly wouldn't bother with the expensive stuff unless I had brand new car- but the reallity of the situation is we are all driving 13 year old cars with engines pushing 150,000km!!

Anti-clockwise. Break the seal with your hands from above, then get in
through the arch to take it off.

I can see the point of view, but that is literally like saying throw any old
$hite at it because it is well worn anyhow. Look after your vehicle and it'll
look after you. I'd agree with only using semi-synth rather than synth, but
                  otherwise.....................

I drain the oil from the sump, put the drain plug back in, then shift the catch
bowl, (an old washing up bowl), and place it lengthways underneath the driver
side wishbone. That catches any drips that come from the filter/housing when
you take it off. Swish some new oil around the inside of the filter as well before
putting it on. Takes less time for the oil to saturate the filter at turnover then.

Might also recommend using Nev's method of flushing through for fifteen mins
with some cheap oil before removing the filter. Fetches out a cartload of extra
                    muck.

Bugger. Just realised this is in the 3L section. Everything else should apply
the same. It's just the filter location that's different.

I agree I sell Genuine & Aftermarket car parts for a living & I have seen some bad oil filters.

Personally I only use Genuine oil filters, the Toyota one used on my 3rd Gen (90915-30002) not only has a pressure release valve but it also has a double filter system in it...& it's made by Denso, but Denso will not supply to anyone else except Toyota at the moment....I have tried as I have an account with Denso but only on electrical parts.

There was a site on the internet I found once that cut a load of oil filters in half to compare them for quality.....there were some that were rusty inside & some had lower quality filtration.

One of the makes that got a bad report was a very well known brand called FRAM.....now Fram make the Genuine oil filter for some Jaguars!!!
