As far as I know, the non-return valve is for retaining some oil in the filter
once the engine is switched off, to retain some oil in the filter for startup.

Thats what i thought, but as winter approaches anybody got any recommended oil additives to reduce friction/wear on winter starts....

I know this is one of those can of worms type subjects, but apparently
the PTFE additives do cause more wear than using standard oil. DuPont
did try to ban manufacturers of that stuff using their PTFE for engine
additives, and the tests Briggs & Stratton did actually showed more
engine wear when that type of stuff was added to the oil.

Best solution would be to add some oil to your diesel. Quickest way of getting
some lubrication in there. It's the design two strokes have been working merrily
                  on for years.

slick 50 or simply use magnatec oils.

toyota engines can see 300,000 miles if serviced regularly with ordinary oils . i dont see any use for additives.
