  • jammed rear window

just done a search, but it appears that so many parts of the tailgate assembly can fail, each thread describes a problem, or symptom unique to the poster!

all my tailgate tackle was hitherto ok..the first symptom of impending doom came when the cockpit switch failed to lower the window, but if done via the key, the interior switch would raise it..

that was a week ago..today, the window was lowered via the key, for the purposes of loading the rear with the usual tools, bags of rubble and step ladder that signify the beggining of the weekend..the unloading proceedure was equally undramatic and successfull, on both accassions the window was raised, with the key without complaint..

now t'bugger won't shift..up, nor down..tiss well and truely stuck..stick the key in, and it will not turn to the right..it will however turn to the left, with an acompaning click from a relay...i'm scuppered....

i've pulled of the rear panel, to reveal a black cover held with screws..i looked at it for several seconds..then made a cup of tea..can you fellas suggest a starting point? or is the realms of the expert? of which i am most definitely..........not.

in a word..no. i know where you are coming from, as its something i've done in the past..caused great confusion that one..it was after washing the interior..put the key in,window wipers started doing their thing, seats needed ajusting, mirrors were all askew, radio didn't work, airvents were shooting streams of air conditioned ice particles every which way..thought to meself, "i ain't doing that again"..the window saga came to light when a fellow surfer started rapping on the glass at a filling station..lots of shrugging shoulder gestures and goldfish impressions later, the penny dropped..i'd hit the window lock with me duster and tin of mr sheen..$$$$$$ embarrasing all the same..

cheers for the input though..would have been a cheap solution, i'm always happy to recieve that kinda advice..

Sound like you need to first pull the covers off the tailgate and apply 12V to the motor, to make sure its OK, and that the regulator and gears are OK, reverse the polarity to go the other way, then find the thick green and red wires in the window ECU plug, and put 12V to them, in each direction to prove wires from the ECU to the window motor are OK.

Then you can pull the switch out of the door and get it working in both directions, then check you get a click from the Relay in both directions to prove the switch wiring goes to the ECU which a common breakage point in the loom from the door to into the truck body.

If the relay isn't clicking from either switch or key, there is a good chance the relay is buggered, clicks from switch but not key are generally wire breaks in the loom.

If both relays click for both directions its a good chance the contacts in the relays are burnt, they are the top two in the ECU, swap them with the middle two that work the window wiper, the relay nearer the connector plug is the down relay, the other the up.

Other things to check first is the wiper is located properly, the door latches are closed properly, and the lock button is properly down. Most of the above will make the ECU beep though.

There are other things, but these are the general things.

thanks for all those pointers tony..frankly, your post contained all the information i needed in order to address the problem..you see, i didn't understand any of it..which means, depending on your workload, i'll be contacting you in due course, to see if we can't sort a slot out so i can get the window sorted, plus some long overdue care and attention in the fluids department..

to be forewarned, it'll be the diff oils.

            transmission fluid change..

            universal joints..

belts.well, basically a full service, but with a high expectation that the brakes will need padding, maybe even discs replaced...dunno if you have that kinda gear on the shelf? but it'll be a 100 plus mile run to see you, so i'd like to be prepared..anyway, we'll continue this conversation via more appropiate channels.talk to you soon.

              Stop!!!!!!

              Try this first:
Had same problem - key wouldn't turn. I subjected the lock to a viscious jetting of WD40, which freed it up. All was ok then.

Trouble with the window being down in my '92 2.4 is that you cant get to the gubbins - theres a plate of glass in the way!

              hope this helps

thanks for that ledgend..must admit though, i'd had similar thoughts myself, and had fired almost half a tin of WD, well, something similar, and expensive down the barrel..did all the locks at the same time..looked as if we'd been out dogging in it by the time i'd finished..theres often brickdust and plaster floating about in the rear, and what with the month of rain, i too thought it might have simply siezed..despite my best efforts, it appears the problem is more electrical or mechanical failure than the ravishes of weather and cargo..anyway, glad it worked for you..and i'm long overdue a visit to an accomplished spannerman..hope i don't upset my local mechanic too much, i'll have to say it broke down in basingstoke and we managed to limp to Tony's garage..really i ought to put more trust in the local lads..i just get a little paranoid..its my truck we're talking about here..oh well, its probably because everything seems so complicated to me, i assume its really specialist..i guess the boys change auto box fluids every day and could find the greasing points blindfolded..but i'd be a whole lot happier knowing Tony had given it the once over..

just to add, the key will turn to the left without effort..there is a click from the relay in the tailgate, but there is no sign that the window is even attempting to open..

it would appear that i might have been a little hasty in discounting ledgend's theory regarding the copious application of WD40..inspired by his outcome, i emptied the remains of my tin into the lock..my assumption was that the outcome would be as unproductive as the previous attempts, and to a degree, it was..perserverance however paid dividends and just prior to the point where i feared the key might break off in the lock, and probably more out of frustration than expectation, it went.....and now, it would appear all is fine..the interior switch isn't working at all, but the key is most definitely turning, and the window is gliding up and down effortlessly....he is indeed a ledgend, and thanks for inspiring a further last ditch attempt..

thought i'd post the outcome..although humiliating for myself, and i'm sure gratifying for ledgend, hopefully the result will be of interest to someone searching down the line and demonstrate that lack of follow up to a disaster thread doesn't neccessarily mean the vehicle has been s$$$$ped...cheers for the input all, appreciated as always.

Had a similar problem with mine recently. Not sure why but I think the lock mechanism was sticking, so not allowing the key to turn. Eventually got it to move by pulling and pushing the key in the lock very slightly until it decided to work. Could be you had a similar problem & the WD40 cured the sticking.
