  • Locked Rear Diff ??

Strange problem on a Gen 3 SSRG KNZ185, I have read all the items and cannot find anything relating to my problem.

I think my Rear Diff is locked on, as when I turn from any “T” junction my rear wheels always screech.. When I press the 4WD button the green lights just flash all the time, is there any way I can manually un-lock the rear diff? When I press the 4WD drive button, you can hear the click sound, but the lights never go off.

    Or

Do I need to get the grease gun out and keep my finger crossed or is there a Manual way of de-selecting the drive?

One of the solenoids could be stuck.

    Whereabouts in Kent?

Just jack one back wheel up, and with the car in N (and hand brake off of course) see if you can spin the wheel. If the diff is locked it won't turn, if it spins then everything is OK its just your right foot that not working properly!

          Update....Still not sure....

I have jacked up the surf this morning and the rear wheel spins freely on both sides.

It must be my right foot!!! Or rubbish rear tyres, as the back end is really wild in this damp weather.

Is there any other reason while the light on the dash still flash, I have done the usual things of rocking back and forward and turning full-lock both ways etc, but still no joy.

It is starting to look like a solenoid problem, how can I test these and looking underneath at the rear diff from the back, is it the device right on the top of the diff or is there more than one soleniod per diff?

Any advice for be greatly appreciated

If thery are the original Jap tyres, then that is a likely contributor, as despite often looking excellent they are generally accepted as rubbish.

Think you might be a little confused here, unless you have a separate switch on your dash to lock the read diff, then you do not have a lockable rear diff and should see no solenoids etc on it.
What you so have is selectable 2 or 4wd with a lockable center diff (inside the transfer case)

Thanks for the Info about the lockable centre diff.

You are right, I am confused …with the 4WD system, I understand the Hi/Lo and 2WD/4WD etc, but my 4 green lights and Orange centre light just keep flashing on my dash meaning the 4WD system does not engage?

Any ideas about the flashing dash lights and how to test the 4WD system….?

You will be right about the rear tyres, I have had the front changed but not the back, and I will get these changed.

              Thanks for the info

                Hi,
Notwithstanding all the correct advice received, are you actually reporting that your truck is not returning to 2wd from 4wd....if so, you should drive to a local spot where you can reverse straight back without turning steering some distance, during which (hopefully) the drive will disengage ie from all wheel drive to rear wheel drive. On mine there is a barely discernable clunk from underneath...yours may be quieter

Thanks for all the advice recieved.

I have been forwards, I have been backwards, but they are still flashing when I press the 4WD button.

I can here a clunk when I press the button to 4wd or 2wd, but the lights still flash, from the Jap manual that I have got the pictures show the lights should be on with 4WD and off with 2WD.

I have had her up on ramps and greased all the points and shafts, I have checked the rubber pipe that is about 18" long and there is not cracks or holes etc, I have checked all the electrical parts and there are all ok, I have check the fuse, which is a 20, and that is OK.....

                  Arghhhhh.....

What can I do next, or where can I take her for an overhall before the winter?

I live in Medway kent any Ideas, I am not sure what the local Toyota garage would charge for this....

                    Hi,
I am still fairly sure this is something very basic /fundamental, just a question of identifying source of prob. The switch button let into the side of the smaller (transfer) gearlever, could that be sticking...no so as you can see it, but inside forming a inappropriate connection....To eliminate this as a possible cause, spray some electrical contact cleaner directly onto it...This stuff takes a few minutes -three or four - to get into the contacts and it then very cleverly disperses leaving a cleaner contact...DO NOT fiddle with the switch whilst it is doin its stuff...then try the switch...depressed should be 4wd lights flashing, and "raised" it should be 2wd no lights on dash...
Cannot really say there is anything else on top of what has already been covered by others and of course yourself prior to this...best of gud luk

The fault may be with the indicator rather than the 4wd system - presumably there is a limit switch which tells the system when the drive is engaged or disengaged.

I'm in NW Kent up by the M25 J3 - you're welcome to come and see what mine does.

When you press the 4wd button, the indicator light will flash untill you go round a corner to fully engage.

Thanks for all your advice, I have tried them all

                          Update...

I am getting 2 BFG A/T fitted tomorrow £126 fitted per tyre, I am not sure if that is a good price, but it is done and paid for, should stop the rear end snaking and wheel spinning all the time.

She is booked in at 11am for Toyota to have a look and see what the problem is with the 4WD, fingers crossed.

In the wet leafy roads today, even when in in 4l, which I think is 4 wheel drive centre lock, the rear wheel spin and the front do nothing, and the lights are still flashing, but I will let you all know what the problem is tomorrow after the Toyota visit.

I am not sure if I can post this bit.....but if you go to

                          http://www.yankeetoys.org/docs.htm

you can download the Toyota EPC disks, which is the electronic parts catalog, not sure of these cover the Jap one though.

nah, 4L is 4wd low ratio

                            you in a 3rd gen?

press the button for 4wd without diff locked
                            (drive anywhere on that one)

4H is 4wd high ratio (centre diff locked)

are you trying to engage on the move or while stationary?

get to about 10/20mph press button, lights should flash (green only) if they don't turn constant then try turning the wheel side to side a bit and shift gear selector into neutral and roll for a little

probably cos of unevenly worn tyres so unless everything is turning at the same rate then the computer won't let 4wd select...

Yes I have a 3rd Gen, I think you could have hit the nail on the head with the tyre issue.

March this year, my truck was parked in the snow outside the house, when a car lost control and drove into the front of the truck, and pushed it about 1 meter down and up on the curb, first time it snowed since I had the truck and then it was off the road for 8 weeks, waiting for parts etc @ toyota, but it needed a new front tyre, so both were changed at the front, I said to the insurance company that I want all 4 tyres to match, (Like they used too, but they said they didn't need to do this....

I have tried to engage 4WD both Stationary and on the move (About 10mph), but I am getting to new rear tyres today, so hopefully, the lights may stop flashing...fingers crossed.
