My noise is a bit like a rasping whistle like when you blow through a blade of grass between your thumbs but mettallic. I was fairly sure at first that it was some sort of high frequency rattle, but it is defenitely throttle position related.

It happens once engine is fairly warm and the turboo is certainly running at when I hear the whistle but it is louder than the pure turbo whine.

I have had my injectors replaced the other day and that has made no difference. I was just about to pull the turbo, but looking at your news I might hang on, What did the turbo cost?

    Regards

Latest is that I think the noise may be in the dash/footwell somewhere. It will do it a high revs when stationary and is clearly audiable ove the engine noise but at same revs with head under bonnet I can't make it out.

P.S. Its a little scary at high revs with head close to engine.

Turbo cost £650 inc VAT, shipping and fitting. It comes with a 2 year warranty but is a refurb job not new. Can't remember the place my mech sorted it for me.

My noise is as you describe but since towing recently I can say that it only does it above 2150rpm, once warm and at more than a certain throttle position i.e. underload. It will not do it below 2150rpm regardless of throttle position or load and if you creep the revs up whilst driving it won't do it until the throttle passes a certain open poistion. Which is why I think the turbo is a red herring!

Goodluck I let you know what happens.

Free reving it won't do it at all until 4000rpm ish. It comes and on like its switched on and off

I have the same problem, see my thread. I replaced the turbo yet kept my noise!

My noise only happens when driving. It appears to have no adverse effect yet! Still it is bound to be the prelude to a huge outpouring from my wallet.

By the way just bought a Toyota Estima and head gasket has gone! Cars, I want a horse and cart.

              its fixed.....thank god!

Well finally got around to checking for the noise again. Found that where the inlet manifold and head meet the gasket doesn't completely fill the gap. I have had the manifold off before and ground it flat so it looked like the head wasn't completely flat.

Well I loosened the manifold and used instant gasket on both sides of the manifold gasket. Put it back together and hey presto no more noise.Even the wobble when you turn off the engine has gone.

If anyone else has this prob and has had a new head it looks like there maybe badly machined heads on the market. Mine was genuine from Toyota too. At first I assumed it was the manifold but as I said I grouind that compelely flat.

              Anyway Hu-******-rah! Its fixed.

                Hurraaah!!
I fixed mine too mate, mine needed a gasket between the turbo and the exhaust manifold though, same noise!
Replaced the gasket, killed the squealing cat!!!

I have a problem with the breather pipe that connects under the turbo sensor though!! My mechanic put it back on when it popped out, (superglued it) and it keeps coming off!!! apparently I need to buy a new turbo sensor just for the breather pipe inlet that is broken??? Please comment. When I replace it do I need to reset the ecu?
Does anybody have a spare one??

                Cheers
