  • 1994 Surf, Auto Box Problems :-(

    Hello :-) please help !!

My '94 Gen2 Surf auto box is being a pain. In auto, it will usually not find first on its own, or eventually does when you've got a lot of revs on trying to pull away in second. Demonstrating how bad things are I have been driving it like a manual for ages, pull away in 1st, change up to 2nd, then into Auto. Its been like this for at least a couple of years, but that probably only amounts to 3k-4k. Recently the auto box has starting misbehaving shifting from 2nd to 3rd as well as 1st-2nd. The writing is on the wall. In "manual" mode its fine, gears are smooth etc. Obv I can't get to third this way ............

My regular garage, who have had a lot to do with this vehicle, including a complete front end re-build last year, have throughly checked everything gearbox related : they find it to be all OK.

I must be out of my mind - but this is my Hilux we're talking about - does anyone know of anywhere that can sort this out - I appreciate that the box and associated computer bits (way out of my depth here) will need to be extracted and sent off, that's fine.

Thank you so much any help, pointers, suggestions, any input at all, gratefully received.

    Mandy

ps : if I have posted in the wrong section, apologies.

To anyone in the future reading this thread. Looks like one of the soleniods is the issue.

See this for description of problem and fix
    https://hiluxsurf.co.uk/forum/hilux-...id-replacement

    See this for parts
    https://hiluxsurf.co.uk/forum/hilux-...shift-solenoid

    EXCERPT
However to make sure you have the right part number for yours enter your vehicle details into this site: http://jp-carparts.com/index.php, go to the toyota section at the bottom of the page. Then go to "Electrical", then "overdrive and electronic controlled transmission". You will see the n 1 solenoid in the exploded diagram.

Part nos for Gen2 and Gen3 are different.

If this fix works for me I will update this thread.

To those who have posted on these and other boards in the past and have helped me today : thank you
When the internet is good, it is really good x
