I have been looking at the elect.cct diagram for my KNZ 130.
Suggest that you check Fuse No 5 in the drivers kick panel - 10 amps
    Controls :
Gauges, meters & service indicators plus warning buzzers (except discharge warning light ):- "battery maybe ???"
back up lights, ac, Electronically Control Auto Transmission, back window, defogger, ADD control system.

Put another way if this fuse has blown , there will be no power to the ECU, which will lock out your drive & 4x4 selectors !!!!!!!!!

Might help, might not but hope it does

I wish I had seen this post yesterday. Had similar probs on Saturday, after towing a hired trailer with faulty electrics, that blew my brake light fuse. Luckily I remembered reading a thread where something similar had happened to someone else. I even had spare fuses in the glove box!!

Glad it is sorted out anyway.

The lever lock out needs power, if none of your electrics a working it won't work either. Find the fuse thats blown or loose wire and you should be fine.

If you have a multimeter with a continuity buzzer (cheapy from Maplin about a tenner) disconnect the battery and put the meter probes between the feed side, of the fuse that keeps going and ground. Go round and give everything a good wiggle. When you wiggle the faulty wire or switch on the faulty item ( as per the list that Stara posted) the meter will buzz. I hate intermittant faults.

My money is on the heated rear screen or the rear window popping the fuse.

have you checked your tow-bar electrics for water?

                          Matt,
Sorry have'nt replied sooner but been up in the Highlands for three days ( working )
Good to see the possible problem area has been found.
Now you still have the fuse blowing, right this is what you do, last thing at night when your finished with your beauty ( no not the wife )
Switch everything off & i mean everything.
Next day do not switch anything on, until after the engine has started & the Surf has moved forward, then stop.
Switch one item ( from the previous list -of not working ) checking each time that your Surf engages gear & moves, switch off that item, & try the next, until the fuse blows, meaning you cannot engage the gearbox, if this happens your fault is the item which you have just switched on.
I am assuming that you do not have a multi-meter or know how to use one, if you have & do then use it to work your way through the list.

Remember though that if it a intermittent electrical faulty you may never find it without a MULTI-METER & LUCK.
One other small point, i know the dash lights etc will come on when the key is turned, so the problem maybe with them.
Question are all the dash lamps on now the same as before the problem arose ??
It has been known for a lamp to blow & have a short to earth, thereby blowing your fuse ( permanent or intermittently ) its rare but does happen.

                          Good Hunting

Thanks for your suggestions. The "beauty" is using the "beauty today so will check it out tonight.
Checking all the items that do not work after a blown fuse did not occur

                            Cheers

Yeah try the rear screen mine was faulty , wire gone in two places where movement takes place, the wiring had to removed to check and found wire burnt out on screen connectors .Also where the wire is anchored in sleeving to the tailgate itself, wires were burnt out and nearly shorting together.Hope this helps.
