  • Trouble starting

    Hi there,

Been having some trouble starting the Surf for the last few months, needed to turn the ignition until the beep 4/5/ times and then it would start. Obviously I put this down to needing new glow plugs and got around to fitting them the other day. Initially I thought the problem was improved, but now I've had to accept that it isn't, this morning it took 5-6 attempts before it started and was lumpy when it did.

    I'm just looking for a checklist of things to check really. On the list so far is;
    Glow plugs
    TPS

Anything else I should look out for?

    Many thanks.

Fuel primer diaphram leaking, letting air in causing the fuel to drain back to the tank?

      Thanks for that, much appreciated.

When it's warm and started it runs fine, can I discount the fuel pump?

        Yes.
The pump is working fine and the engine will start OK when it's warm because there's fuel sill in the lines. It'll take a number of hours e.g. over nigh
t for the fuel to drain back to the tank.

You need a replacement fuel primer, the part that the fuel filter screws on to.

          Ahh....that's the primer!!

How would I go about testing it? Also, when it does eventually fire up there's loads of excess exhaust out the back, does that make sense if the primer is not working properly?

I was just wondering, would pressing the fuel pump button or depressing the accelerator a few times before I start it - if it then started properly would that confirm it's the fuel primer at fault?

I don't think pressing the throttle will do anything, it's all electric'ery after all...pumping the primer, on the other hand, is worth trying.

Hi Andy, I tried pumping the primer this morning and lo and behold the car started first time, for the first time in months! Lumpy, very lumpy, but it started. I'll be looking for a replacement fuel primer as soon as I've sorted all the other problems out....

Ace, let me know if you find it and what you want for it. Other problems at the moment include the rear window which I'm in the middle fixing - have a mechanism on its way to be fitted and poor braking, undiagnosed right now...

                          What happens with the braking?

Thingy in the middle - wheel cylinder?

So if I'm reading that right, hard brake peddle? In which case look at the servo and vacuum systems...probably got a leak.
