    a light has just come on saying T-BELT any idea's what it is guy's

    Its telling you that your Trouser belt is undone.

    or possibly that that your TIMING BELT is due for a change. If you know when it was last done, then you can ignore it or reset it. If you dont, it might be a good idea to change it.

      How many miles does your Surf have on the clock? It normally comes on when you pass a milestone. Mine came on at 200000Km

      As said above...if done recently...reset it (pull out the rubber grommet, on the dial shield, and press the button - on ignition or something). If not...get it done

        Yeh your timing belt needs changing pretty sure it should be done every 100,000 km!

          If no evidence of when belt was last done then do that, the Tensioner, Idler, Water Pump, Crank & Cam Seals. Also check Harmonic Balancer is still ok.

              had dash out to fix rev counter then it came on but its at 89oookm,s

              is cambelt a hard job? can a hobby mechanic do it or do i send it in to get done?

                Crank nut can take a bit of persuading.
                But on the whole easy enough.
                You just have to take a load of stuff off first that is in the way.
                Well worth getting a water pump and a crank seal at the same time, like Nev said.

                  okay maybe i,ll have a go at changing it i searched the forum need a toothpick for dash to turn light off if i cant change it anyone recommend a garage near southampton to do it?

                      True, but down here some seem to be able to get the timing wrong somehow. Seen a few. Very important to get the belt tension correct and the timing marks aligned.

                        You'd think a pro mechanic would at least manage to get that right. I'd have thought it was bread and butter stuff for them.

                          Not all mechanics are created equal....varying degrees of competence, interest and technical knowledge. I can remember guys with no training and very little skill setting up as 'mobile' mechanics...people you wouldn't want to pump your tyres up...

                            One example I can quote on, is a mate had a so called mechanical workshop do his belt. Had problems soon after and all pointed to the timing being out. After many complaints and them saying they could not have got it wrong, they finally gave in and took it apart and found the pump timing out a tooth or two. What caused this? Simple.........the belt was not installed correctly. They fixed it, but I had to do the lot again shortly after when the water pump started to leak. They did not change it when they did the belt. You have to really get it right between the pump and crank otherwise it will not tension correctly. That is why I always have the crank one tooth before TDC, put the belt on and then turn crank that one tooth to tension between it and the pump.

                            Another example is a Toyota dealership that did the belt on the work Hiace bus. Four weeks later they got it back after an engine rebuild. They got the belt timing wrong, or something else and stuffed it.

                            BTW, I have no formal training as a mechanic, but have come across quite a few who are supposed to be trained that I could teach a thing or two.
