  • LN130 very difficault to start

Need some help guys, I'm about to give up...

Got a 91 LN130, had leaking fuel pump, rad was on its way out and needed a cam belt...

    So, its had:
pump seal kit (off car rebuld)
    cam bent, tensioner and ideler
    glow plugs (tested)
    New Rad

Timing I have checked and re-checked...
Pump timing I have tried adjusting slightly..
    No joy!!

She is very, very hard to start and once going she throws white smoke and I get very bad diesel knock... she won't idle but revs freely right through the rev range...
Retarded timing was my first thought, so advanced the pump a few mm.. no difference...
I have tried advancing further and retarding... checked glow plug power feed, all seems OK.....

    Anyone got any ides?
I'm getting close to cutting my losses and outing her....

could it be it's not related to all the work you've done?

what about fuel filter/primer leaking/sucking air or the state of other fuel pipes?

have you tested other common failures like head/gasket?

This sounds very similar to my current issues, do you also have an engine light on? Please post back if you have any luck

        Thanks for the replies guys...

        Still no luck....

Head gasket... not had it off to check but no oil or bubbles in water no water in oil nor steam from the exhaust (when I have had her running)...

Just about to throw in the towel.... I feel an ebay listing of spares or repair coming on......

Did you check the fuel system for air leaks?

EBay as spares won't get you much cash, £600 possibly......perseverance chap, check everything methodically and someone on here will have the clue you need.

I meant to ask, does it still smoke when hot?

In fact, could you video it? Might help seeing and hearing it you never know.

Double check you connected the injector pipes to the correct ports on the back of the pump. It's easy to mix two of them up if they've all been all disconnected

Looking at the back of the pump:
Injector no. 1 is top right
Injector no. 3 is top left.
Injector no. 4 is bottom left.
Injector no. 2 is bottom right.

Maybe fuel pump is failing? I had to install a lift pump in mine. Since I have it starts super smooth. Before I would have to turn it over for ages until it primed itself and fuel would begin pulling through.

Thing will no longer start at all.......

I did check and recheck everything....

Thought at one point I had the pump 180 degrees out... ripped the front off to properly check...nope timing is correct
Fuel at the injectors (but maybe not enough.....)
                No leaks anywhere
                No ECU error codes
                Everything plugged in
                Checked new glow plugs again
checked for power to new glow plugs again
                Clean fuel...
                checked the new fuel filter

Had a lift pump to try already, fitted that.....nothing

I can only put it down to a totally dead pump or head/valve problems...

Either way I am not prepared to spend any more time and money on a 22 year old lump of tin...
She needs new bumpers and the wife slid the nearside corner down a lamp post a few years back... By the time I got her going and fixed everything else I am part way to a newer, nice surf...

                So if anyone is interested....

                New....
                rad
                Cam belt
                Idler pulley
                tensioner and spring
                front tyres

                New calipers 12 months ago
                running gear is all fine
interior is good, no rips, stains, seat bolsters are good...
Blaupunkt Paris and 10 CD Autochanger...
