Glow Plugs

I decided to get some new glow plugs put in My 2.4 Gen 2.

When I started it from cold it blew out a cloud of smoke and ran lumpy for a little while, I could press the accelerator and the lumpiness would go but it would chuck out more smoke as I did this.

So I thought maybe the glow plugs were old and crappy. I got my local garage to put some in while it was in there for something else.

Now it struggles more to start than before! I have to hold the starter on for 5 seconds maybe?

Any ideas what could have happened? or what to do next?

It does seem to, it definitely takes longer than before I had my glow plugs changed, Although you don't get the clouds of smoke.

Start with the batteries.
What voltage do you have at ignition off?
Then check with engine running.
If batteries are good and alternator is charging ok, then it could be fuel primer.

If you pump the primer on the top of the fuel filter it should get hard after 4-6 ish pumps.

batteries both at 12.70 before

left battery 13.81 while running
right battery 13.84 while running

I don't know where the fuel filter/primer is, any pointers?


If I turn it off and then start it again it starts ok, so think its mainly when its cold its struggling.

I did think maybe its just how its meant to be, so I was prepared for when I get it back from garage for it to be the same, but not worse!

Fuel primer is on top of the fuel filter.
If you open the bonnet and lean into the engine bay from the passenger side, at the firewall you will see some things bolted there, one is the wiper motor then the next thing is the fuel filter, on the top of the fuel filter is a black plastic button, this is the fuel primer.

Put key in ignition, wait 3/4 seconds. turn key.

I did try waiting 10 seconds but then it was even harder to start.

I tired pressing the priming button, it didn't seem to get harder after any number of presses, I stopped at 15.

3 to 4 seconds. Ive had diesels before, the light goes off quicker than any ive had before so I ignore it and usually wait 3 or 4 seconds, I have been reading up about the glow plugs being on for 120 seconds so decided to ignore the light and just count myself to 4

Get the garage to prove current draw when glow plugs being used.

Out of curiosity what colour smoke?

You need a new primer because the diaphram has split and fuel is draining back to the tank when the engine is off.

You need to isolate the batteries from each other before checking their outputs, they are linked together.

I fitted a drain back valve when I suffered from the same problem with my LJ70

Have you checked that they put it back together correctly and the glow plug fuse is ok. Connect a multimeter to glow rail and earth. Should be around 10.5V with ignition on.
