    Over Heating

Does your heating get piping hot? When I had an airlock in mine I left over night and could not get the of the air. I turned the heaters to full, took for a spirited drive as fast as possible up a hill and halfway up the hill the needle went up and came straight back down.

Job done and air gone! Just keep an eye on that needle.

From memory the temp gauge sensor sits so high up under the stat housing that if you lose any coolant it sits in air so won't move any way. You may see it suddenly go up then straight back down as coolant passes over it.
I really wouldn't rely on the temp gauge as a sure fire way of knowing the temp.

Just wondering: When the engine has been off after a journey...how long does the coolant take to cool down? Mine takes ages but I have no obvious issues (did a full system change last month).

Thinking about getting a 3rd party gauge.

Couldnt see anything useful under the bonnet such as low coolant or low oil so risked the 110mile journey from Nottingham to Reighton Gap (near Filey) and had no issues. The temp needle stayed where it always normally sits and my driving was on or just below the speed limit on motorway and national speed limit roads.

If I hadn't seen the previous post by Koi I would just be presuming it was a one off because of an air block or something but now I am naturally concerned it may be more.

To be honest sylux I couldn't really say. Before I had the flush and re fill with red coolant and new thermostat the temp gauge took about 10 minutes to achieve what I thought was normal which was hovering just before the thermometer icon. Now it only takes mere minutes so either it is taking longer to cool down or the old stat wasnt working properly.

You need to keep an eye on the coolant levels for a while, if you notice any changes then you need to start looking for the reason(s).

If you stick the heater on full is the air coming out hot?

If you are worried get the coolant checked for combustion gases.

No hrat from the heater when in full but I didnt before which was my original reasob for getting the collant flushed. Might be un related but I have noticed I have a slight oil leak that wasnt there before.

Still seems to be driving ok.

Assuming the heater valve works and is connected, you should get some heat out of the heater.
Unless the heater matrix is choked you should have flow through the heater.
If you disconnect the heater pipes at or near the bulkhead you should be able to stick a garden hose down one pipe and have water flow out the other end.

You may still have an air lock in the system.
This is probably the initial cause of the problem.

Bleeding all the air out can be a lengthy process.

I did flush (perhaps not enough) the heater matrix and the vale is opening and closing fine as I checked the pipe after the calve eas getting hot. Perhaps it is full to the brim with crud. I really dont want to have to take the heater matrix out to do a full flush as I've read it is a major pain in the ass.

I've just arrived in Whitby after driving 30 miles in hot sun and over those plesent North Yorks hills and no temperature increase. The newly found oil leak is still evident.

Out of curiosity, how feasable would it be to stick a 3l into a 2.4 engine bay? Is it fairly straight forward (obviously not for me to do of course!).

If you flushed the heater matrix through and you had water coming out then it would suggest that you have/had a airlock.
They can be buggers to bleed.

                    Swapping a 2.4 to a 3.0 is possible.
I think the general consensus is why bother?
Speed costs, how fast can you go?

Yeah, had water coming out when I did it. Im thinking it may be partially full of sludge only allowing a small percentage of water through hence luke warm instead of sub tropical.

As for the engine swap, I never really wanted 2.4 after reading stuff on here but it came at a great price which I couldnt ignore.

The body is pretty good, no evidence of rust and nothing worth worrying about chassis wise. Figured if I get a transplat for 3l then less prone to dreaded cracked head, an increase in power (as opposed to speed) and longer engine life.

Would it be as straight forward as out with one and in with the other (presuming they were built standard to accomodate any engine version?

If you mean the 3Ltr 1KZ-TE then no. You need the engine mounts changed and a complete wiring loom and ECU transplant.

Thats poo. Thought it would need a new loom and definately a new ecu but thought the Tyota bods would have made thier own lives easy (and cheaper) by having the same mountings. Cheers for the info Nev.

Plan B then, when I figure it out.

Must admit to being impressed on the night I bought my 2.4.

Flew down the motorway, watching the speedo climb quickly.

                                60,80,100, then almost 120

                                Then I remembered
