  • Diesel pump operation.

    Hi

Whilst I have the head off the 2.4 lump, I was looking at the pump.
The timing marks didn't line up like the others after the belt was removed.

I tried moving it by hand back to the correct position but gets progressively tighter. Move it back it is ok but then goes stiff again.

Had a swift look through the past threads for any clue but not found any.

If I attach a socket to the pulley and turn it clockwise it tightens then springs forward, as though it is riding over a spring loaded cam.

I know some popes are lobe type, or run over a spring cam with a non return type valve in.

Basically, should the pump sprocket turn smoothly by hand without the tight spots, or is the pump as broken as the head.

    Regards

Will have 4 tighter spots. One each quater.
well, that was a bad idea!

Thanks for that. At least I know thats not goosed.

Will be going for sale as spares then along with any other engine bits that are not required.

        Thought this might be helpful.

        Installation
Check tensioner pulley and guide sprocket for smooth operation. Replace if necessary.
Slacken tensioner bolt [7] . Remove tensioner spring [10]
Check free length of tensioner spring is 44,5-45,5 mm. Replace spring if necessary.
Fit tensioner spring. Push tensioner to side and lightly tighten bolt [7] .
        Ensure timing marks aligned [4] , [5] & [6] .
Fit timing belt in following order:
        Crankshaft sprocket.
        Tensioner pulley.
        Injection pump sprocket.
        Camshaft sprocket.
        Guide sprocket.
NOTE: Ensure belt is taut between sprockets.
        Ensure timing marks aligned [4] , [5] & [6] . 7.
Slacken tensioner bolt [7] . Push tensioner against belt.
Turn crankshaft slowly four turns clockwise to TDC on No.1 cylinder.
Ensure timing marks aligned [4] , [5] & [6] . If not: Repeat installation and tensioning procedures. 10.
        Tighten tensioner bolts [7] : 44 Nm. [11] & [12] : 19 Nm. 11.
Check and adjust injection pump timing.
        Install:
Crankshaft sprocket guide washer [9] .
        Timing belt cover [3] .
Remove crankshaft pulley bolt [1] . Fit crankshaft pulley [2] .
Ensure crankshaft pulley and timing belt cover timing marks aligned.
Fit crankshaft pulley bolt [1] . Tightening torque: 167 Nm.
Fit glow plugs. Tightening torque: 13 Nm.
Install components in reverse order of removal.
        Refill cooling system.
Reset timing belt replacement warning lamp as follows: Remove grommet in speedometer housing. Depress switch using a thin
        screwdriver
