  • Turbo Q's

    Ignorance is bliss.

Had the smell of burning oil on and off for the last few days, so had a good dig around today and found oil staining on the exhaust manifold cover plate.
Worse case I was thinking would be cracked turbo oil pipes spraying up unto cover plate.
Found the short hose from turbo outlet to inlet manifold soaked in oil, easy fix , just give it a clean up and inspect for cracks.....

While I am waiting for it to dry after giving it a good clean I pull off the hose to turbo inlet, there is a bit of oil, but not too much, then I gave the turbo spindle a bit of a fiddle.

How much play is tolerable on the spindle?

    Is a diy rebuild advisable?

    Anybody got a turbo spare?

Very slight side to side play is acceptable.
As long as the blades look OK and it spins freely it's good to go.

Oil in the elbow before the turbo is just condensed oil vapour from the crank case breather. If there's another puddle there within a couple of days after you've cleaned it out, then the valve stem seals are worn.

When you say very slight side play is acceptable is 1-2mm bad?

I did fire it up quite briefly while all the air hoses were disconnected to see if any oil was coming out under pressure and I did see a bit of oil mist from the breather.....

As long as the blades can't touch the housing when you push the spindle to the side it'll be OK. Not perfect, but usable.

Are you using synthetic engine oil? If you are then change it for a heavier mineral oil.

          These guys re-furb Turbos....

The oil has been lurking in the back of my mind for a while.
I used to use a mineral oil similar to the oil in the generators where I used to work....I have used up all that supply now

But on the last oil change I went all high tech and splashed out on some Castrol Synthetic.

Back to the mineral oil again then.

Are the service kits worth doing?
            Cheers

You can use the rebuild kits l, it really depends on what it is that leaking. Plus if you have to separate the turbines to sort the leak make sure they go back in exactly the same place.

Or you can buy pre balanced replacement cartridges, you separate the turbo, pop it in (oiled up) change the o rings and put the 2 housing halves back together. Bit more expensive this way but easier and balanced properly.
well, that was a bad idea!
