  • Weird Fuelling Problem With 2.4TD

I'm having a weird problem with my LJ70 Land Cruiser 2.4TD running on BIODIESEL which shares the same engine as the Surf's.

Last week I started getting power loss when going up hills @ around 3000rpm. The it would not rev past 3000rpm even when stationary. I replaced the main filter and the clear inline one I have before the main filter, used some injector cleaner and all appeared ok. The power was instantly back and it was away no problems at all.

The problem has now returned when I'm heavily accelerating up a hill the power loss is instant. One thing I have noticed from the inline filter is there is bubbles coming from the fuel lines which go back to the tank. I removed the inline filter suspecting that might be at fault as the main filter is also brand new (4 days old) and the power is back to normal, but I'm not entirely convinced.

Any suggestions? I'm thinking maybe its the fuel pickup pipe? As the bubbles are entering the filter. Just clutching at straws as all appears ok for now. Will give it a good blast out again tomorrow to try and replicate,

It could be something in your tank blocking the pick up pipe being pulled up under heavy acceleration.

I had a similar problem a few years ago on a Drumclog Trip using (100% WVO) no problems all the way up (approx 400 miles) n Saturday offroading before it showed itself. At the time I put 10 litres of Dino in n Solved it until Sunday, in preparation for the return Trip home I brimmed up with WVO n no problem at the time.

Some time later down M74/A74 n the Truck was struggling to do 40 mph uphill n no real room for Dino so limped on to Carlisle where I topped up with 1/2 tank of Dino, from startup I noticed it had cleared n as a precaution stopped every 1/2 tank n top up with dino.

      nb.
For those that think it was down to clogged filters, I regularly change mine n had done the day before starting my Trip up.
Never had a problem since !!

      Hope this helps .....

You don't say if ya run any dino along with ya Bio-diesel (could be worth a try) or if ya change ya filters regularly or how long ya been running Bio .....

Tank breather blocked causing a vacuum in the tank?

You say power returns to normal every time you disconnect something from the fuel lines, this would indicate that any vacuum in the tank has been released until you've done another few days of driving when it builds up again making it difficult for the pump to 'suck' any fuel through especially at WOT?

Drive with the filler cap undone and see what happens.
well, that was a bad idea!

I had a 2.4 year's ago and killed it veg oil. Took a few month like. Then last year I tried it in my 3.0 landcruiser broke down using WVO, I decided for the money you save, its really not worth it. The first sign of bad fuel is low revving. I'd say it's running ok when the heater plugs are on, but struggles when not.
That would be my first port of call. Try running it on normal fuel for a bit, see if it clears. It also sounds like a rusty or split fuel line? Tank problems are rare on any car. The only other symtom of not revving over 3000 is egr valve or air mass meter
            What comes around goes around!!

              It'll be tank vacuum.

Bubbles from a vacuum? Maybe air sucked in past filter drain tap o-ring?

Are the tank breathers accessible without dropping the tank?
