  • Packed up power steering

Hey all, i have a 1991 Hilux surf 2.4 TD since i got it, always had very clunking and clacking noise when i turned the wheel, now ofc the power steering has packed up completly, and boy is this bitch a heavy mofo, had a look in all the search function results but im afraid im still none the wiser, need y'all to tell me where the hell do i start, in looking for problem/solution is it possible to fix myself? im a master of using good ole google to solve my problems, and im a pretty good diy'er but for now im stumped as to where to start, and what to check 1st, did see in one post that the power steering has a belt to right of engine???? but i didnt find any belts to right of engine when looking in from the front, only in front and to left, do i need the ole girl up on a ramp? can i even fix this myself, all i know is power steering is no more.

Yep you need to check your belt and the fluid level first. As you said the pump is near the bottom of the engine to the right as you look at it. It may be easiest to remove the viscous fan and the radiator shroud to get access from the top.

You can remove the bash plate and get in from underneath but your air con rad will probably be in the way. If your aircon doesn't work then just remove the aircon rad for access.

Its also easier to see and adjust the belt with the N/S battery removed.

The belt is quiet short, so needs to be a bit tighter than you'd normally do a belt to not slip.

just to throw the spanner in the works.....
the clunking and clacking noise can also be the crank pulley failing. it might just be the harmonic balancer or it could have loosened off the main shaft and damaged the crankshaft.
something to check as they are prone to it.

The crank pulley tends to squeak constantly, not clunk and clatter when turning the steering.

As has been suggested, check the fluid levels and tighten the belt.
