Last truck I worked on that was fine cold and hard to start hot had a loose inlet manifold.
I will have a look at that in the morning, I have noticed a smell of fuel but dont know if it is related to it as truck was dry stored for years and it is just back on road ....as u prob know, thanks for help
I had what sounds like the same problem a week or so ago. When it was cold it started first time everytime, after a journey to the shops I left it for an hour and low and behold it would not start. Took several minutes to get it to turn over. Spent hours checking everything and couldn't see a problem anywhere. My missus asked if the battery was ok. Checked the fluid levels and they were well down. topped it up and charged it and the problem has gone away.
I think becuse the engine was warm, when I turned the key, the cooling fan switched on and put a drained the battery. Now it starts first time every time.

my cooling fan always comes on with first click of the key, but no I have a very powerful battery (new) and I don't think that is it, thanks for trying to help, all fluids are right, would glow plugs have any thing to do with it when engine is hot? When I turn the key the glow plug light only comes on for 1 second, but starts fine in the cold, i thought they must be working or would not start when 0 degrees, but it bumps straight away, does any one know what relay it is for the plugs? i don't know if it is working, thanks

No. Just turn the key to the on position. Wait for the infernal noise to stop, then wait for a far more subtle click, then turn the ignition.

I dont get any click? I see the coil light flash on for about 1/2 second then nothing? I hear the aux fan on (goes off when running) and that is it? , Help? which is the relay for my glow plugs i guess that is whats nopt clicking?
You don't 'have' to pay, it's voluntary but it helps pay for all this good info you're not listening to to be hosted on expensive servers.

To help you on the right track....
Newbie 2.4 start procedure...
To get the most 'glow' out of the plugs on a 2.4 you need to turn ignition on, light will stay on for a few secs, then go out, then a click, keep waiting till you hear a beep behind the dash then start it. If it doesn't do this you have something amiss.
Your fan should not be on unless A/C is on or engine is really hot.
