  • diesel consumption

Have a 93 surf which I,ve recently bought. Did 380 miles on £80 of diesel. There was 5 people in the wagon and this was nearly all motorway driving with overdrive on. this seems very heavy on the diesel, but I would'nt know as it's the first one I've had. It does chuck out heavy black smoke now and then, would be glad of any advice.

    Cheers.

That works out about 16-18 mpg. It's possible you have a problem as it shouldn't put out a lot of black smoke. A bit of black smoke on acceleration is normal but lots is bad. Could be problems with the EMU etc. Might be worth letting a garage have a look at it or, if it's still under warranty. give it to the dealer to sort.

My 3.0TD only did about 18 mpg towing my caravan down to Dorset two weeks ago but thats a lot of towed weight. 5 people shouldn't be any problem for a 3.0 Surf in normal driving, although sustained 75mph plus will knock a big hole in the mpg. Average is around 22-25mpg.

      mpg

that does sound a bit thirsty, are you being heavy footed i often have 5 people in my truck and it makes no difference to mpg, bare in mind it is not a motorway car.

My 3.0 did 441km on a tankful when I shot over to France, 4 up doing @80mph which is 25 mpg - I am more than happy with that.

There is a problem on the fuel/air mixture somewhere, much too thirsty. Just done 600miles in France on about a tank and half at 65 to 70 MPH on motorway.

              diesel consumption

Forgot to mention at the beginning of thread that my surf is an import 2.4 td

Are the imports more heavy on juice than uk spec. Is it a garage job for the air/ mixture to be sorted out. Recently passed the mot emissions okay. My right digit can be a bit heavy at times, but I used all this juice motorway driving with overdrive on all the time. At this rate I'll have to take out a 3rd mortgage. Appreciate any advice.

              Cheers,

              Jamie.

Mine is an import too, they all are!!! only a garage job if you aint used to getting your hands dirty. When was the air filter last changed? There are lots of posts on here about adjusting the FIP and injector cleaning.
                Read them as well.

this may help a little bit.
i recently bought my surf and discovered i was getting about 23mpg out of it. that equates to about 290 out of a 13 gaal /55l (or £45) tank. it was a bit scary. however i soon realised that my old car was designed for going faster and this wasnt so i slowed down abit. the other thing i did which cost 20 quid total was buy a new air filter and put some 'coma' diesel injecter cleaner in the tank. i put that in with half a tank and used the whole bottle. i now get about 27mpg and would get more but i live in a very hilly area and cant resist flooring it every now and then.
                    hope this helps.

When i bought my Surf a few weeks back i filled the tank and added a cleaner at the same time. I got just over 450 with mixed driving styles. Haven't bothered to work out the mpg, but for the size of vehicle i'm happy.
Next i'm going to try a full tank with city diesel see how many k's i get.
                        Cheers peeps......muncher

the filter did not cost twenty quid the whole lot cost twenty quid. pricer than internet but bought and fitted in 10 mins! (better economy on the way home!)

I bought a bottle or 'Millers - Power plus' today apparently it 'improves combustion and boosts cetane' (whatever that is) the guy in the car shop reckons all the taxi drivers are using it so I thought it worth a try, i'll let you know if its good or not in a few days.
