  • A Few Questions

I,ve got a 1989 2.4 turbo diesel surf ,bought in Feb ,replaced the head ,in May and a subsequent recon Turbo.£1800 in total!!!!

    1. Has anybody out there got a Surf that has,nt had a new head on it, reading this forum it seems almost a dead cert ?

    2. Is my head likely to go again ,or what can i do to prevent this?(it is a new block not recon)

3.I,m driving downhill , foot off the accelerator in gear blip the accelerator pedal and large puff of white/grey smoke out of exhaust, driving uphill or on flat none or very little white /grey smoke out of exhaust, is this just excess diesel being burnt off ?

Hope someone out there can help.
    cheers

Hi mate, can't advise on the smoke prob but i have a Surf with orig head (pretty sure) no probs with it. I don't chug around with it,so far it has performed great. I didn't know about the head probs some people on here have had before i bought the Surf. If i had of done i would still of bought it. Just keep it regularly serviced with good oil, filters and coolant etc and enjoy it..........muncher

Well as yet I still have had no problems with the head (92 2.4TD). I once took the head out on an old 5 series BMW, and since then have always driven with one eye on the temperature guage. My understanding is that if it doesn't overheat it doesn't get damaged (I'm willing to be corrected if I'm wrong).

As for smoking I regularly get puffs of black smoke, whenever the throttle is bliped, and it just pasted the MOT (after the steering idle arm had been replaced). I do regularly put an additive in the tank, as all these clean (?) fuels do not contain the lubricants that the older dirty fuels did.

Almost forgot to add my old BMW never blow its head again, it just ran out of serviceable bodywork (hence I always carry gaffa tape in the car, you can do wonders).

Small amounts of black smoke are normal. Anything else is likely to be a problem. It sounds like you might have worn bores / rings or even a water leak as oil burnt smoke is usually blue. Might be worth getting the cylinders pressure tested.

Normally if it pushes ot some smog it will be under load, so if driving uphills ,which you will be putting it under load doesn't produce smoke then I would say all is fine. May be just over fuelling, try putting a whole medium size bottle of redex to 1/4 tank of fuel. It may just need a clean out.
Its not a dead cert the head will go as the poll indicates under 20% of owners have replaced the head. For what ever reason the head goes be it, a batch of poor designed heads, poor maintainance by the owner in Japan, the fact it may have stood at the docks for months before its 3 week boat over here or whatever. Once replaced with good servicing etc you should now enjoy your Surf.

Just thought I would give a virtual-wave to a fellow local surf owner. I live just outside Cupar, what is your surf, just so i can wave when we pass.

Mine is blue, ssrx although unlikely to see her as she loves garages!

              Which garage do you use?

              cheers

My Surf has not smoked at all since I disconnected the RGR valve. Before that I used to get grey/white smoke on accelleration and decelleration.

                      Derek.

Think he meant the EGR valve which is the exhaust gas recirculation valve. It's an emission control device that doesn't do much of value and removing it will make the engine run better plus get it through the MOT better with lower particulate emissions. It's at the top rear passenger side of the engine.

If you do a search for EGR on the forum you will find all you need to know about it.

                      Cheers

I think that was a typo, EGR valve is more likely (and R being next to E on the keyboard and all...)
Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve, covered many times before, have a search, there's lots to find

Apologies, I did mean the EGR Valve ( Exhaust Gas Recirculation).

                            Egr Valve

Being a bit of a dummy here ,surely the valve was put on for a reason and taking it off might effect it in some way,or is it just a gimmicky thingy?
