    Yes it was put on for a reason. It's and emission control device which reduces the levels of Oxides of Nitrogen pumped out of the exhaust. However this is not checked for in the UK and the EGR actually increases particulate emissions which are measured (the smoke test).

    The 2L engine was not originally designed to use and EGR unlike modern engines, and it doesn't do anything good for the engine at all.

    Removing it will reduces CO2 emissions, particulates and release some mid range torque that the engine loses.

    However if it has failed in the shut position like a lot do, then removing it will make no difference as it is not actually working anyway.
