Climate Controls

Hello All -

A couple weeks ago the fan speed control switch on my climate controls (Heat/AC) started acting flakey, not working sometimes or not on some speeds, then it completely quite. I took my unit out and apart:



Here's the damage:



Looks like the switch fried and melted. From some reading I've done this could be caused by a resistor in the heating system? My question is, if there is, does anyone know where this resistor is located or how to check it?

I've tried locating a replacement for the whole climate controls here locally but that's impossible, I'm in Manitoba Canada. I'm having an importer in BC try and get me the part from Toyota Japan. Do any of the 94-96 surfs/4runners/sr5 use this unit, most I've seen have strictly mechanical units. Is there any way I could fix this myself, or even get the fan on at full speed? It's still -30 here so it's too frosty to be driving around with no heat.

There's a resistor in the base of the fan housing. You could remove it and wire the fan directly to 12V through a switch for now.

Might be a bit of a problem with vent controls though.

If shipping won't kill me then I'll take it. Going to try directly wiring it for now, everything else works perfectly fine as far as which vents it uses, just no fan speed control. I'd be happy with 100% or nothing for now till I can get the replacement, I just really need to get my truck back on the road. Haven't drivin it longer than 5-10min in the past month, can only go so long till the windshield freezes up

Well I was able to rig up a switch, when I first did it though it didn't blow much air and I noticed the fan was going the wrong way. I had to reverse the polarity of the wiring to get the fan to spin the right way, but I have heat now!! It's all or nothing, but it's better than nothing!
