  • K&N Filter

I've been thinking about fitting a K&N filter for some time and have seen a number of references (mainly on the Aus site) to the correct part for a 2LTE being K&N 38-9070. Well all I can say is that their 2LTE's have a different air cleaner to mine - this part is way too tall to go in the air box. Maybe it's something to do with being upside down

After a bit of research I have found a filter that does fit, namely K&N E-2487. This is 140mm tall and has an inside dia of 108mm (and, not so important, an outside dia of 171mm). Most car shops should be able to order them.

I would be very interested to hear how you go with the K&N
Pete ( the tart) and I were having a beer the other day and he rekons that the K&N is the mutts nuts.
I am yet to part with my precious $'s before someone else does it.
Let us know how it goes.

Is there any point in replacing the entire STD airbox with a K&N/Pipercross induction filter kit? Doers anyone know of one that will fit? What are the possible drawbacks? I am aware that there would be a need for a higher performance exhasut but would the much less restricted airflow reduce the top end power or does no-one know?

A friend of mine has a pug and has removed the air filter and replaced with a set of tights covering the air box. He is raving about how much quicker it is.

Any coments from anyone on his stupidity?

              Don't do it!!!

Seriously though, when I got my truck from the dealer it had a K&N fitted. I found that it drank fuel all the time, even on long journeys (the best I ever had on a long journey was 20MPG) and even worse than than it actually cut down the power (apparently not enough airflow believe it or not). I eventually got the dealer to change it for the stock version and I found that I had more power and better economy.

The only good thing with the K&N was that you could hear the turbo actually working, and and occasionally you could hear the wastegate working which was quite nice. But bearing in mind that it is not a high boost engine, you don't get much of a 'tsss' when the wastegate opens.

When I was concerned about it, I even wrote to K&N and they specifically told me that it was a bad idea to fit one. Apparently K&Ns are designed for high revving petrol engines, not relatively slow revving diesels.

Sorry to dampen it a bit.

              Jon.

                  Hey dirtydog,

The pipe you have put in for your air intake, who makes it?
Or did you have to get one made up?

It seems a good idea as it will be smooth inside, instead of rough like the original rubber pipes, increasing the air flow abit, but not too much..

I was told the same thing about those K&N air filters, apparently my surf doesn't have an airflow metre and it will put my mixture out of whack with too much air flow! The !!!!!! computers can't even be remapped!!!

Oh well, i guess a new computer is on the cards too improve my modabiity

                  Cheers Nudge....
