  • Problems starting!

Hi, long time since scouring these pages, good to see everyone's still here. Wondering if any body can help.
I have a friends 1st Gen 2.4 at work with starting problems- it coughs and splutters and chucks out white diesel smelling smoke. Had injectors tested and all fine, then changed glow plugs, no change.
Turns out to be loosing fuel pressure within about 10 mins. If you re-pressurise with primer pump it starts fine and runs fine. Thought it could be primer pump, so disconnected engine side and pressurised system with coolant guage/pump- looses pressure quite quick.
Tracked it down to be blowing fuel/pressure back into tank via the return from pump.
Finally my question.......does anyone know the internal workings of pump as to whether this could be a simple o-ring or valve issue, if so can repair be done without removing pump as did the head and rad only a few months ago??? Cheers

no idea on the internals of the pump...but a sub £40 fix would be to fit a Facet electric pump into the fuel supply circuit.

Make sure you get a genuine Facet, lots of cheaper copies on Ebay and they don't last

    Regards

Thanks, nice idea, but i'd rather fix it than avert it. Cheers

Yeah but i'm pressurising system after the fuel filter, therefore can't be the problem!!

i would say its a problem with the fuel in line from the tank to the primer.
if you are loosing pressure, when started it will burn fuel causing vacuume back in pipe causing draw. if its not i would guess you have air getting into the system between the tank and the primer.

i recon you might have a loose pipe on the filter maybe?

            Just my thoughts good luck

I don't see how that could be the problem- the primer and tank aren't even attached! I'm pressurising pump/engine end with pipe off the primer and when you remove the return pipe to the tank, that is where the pressure comes out.................Any ideas Tony??????

I do if you are pumping air into the injector pump and not fuel. I assume that is what you are doing. If I am wrong then blame it on the alcohol. I have had a few bourbons.

Ok, cheers. I'll try and pump fuel from tank with primer ball instead of using in line primer.

Is the Fuel tank breather blocked?

Ignore that, I just reread thread!

Right, just primed up pump with primer ball in diesel line instead of original filter/primer and within 5 mins pressure escaping from pump via fuel return pipe still. Does this mean internals of pump knackered???

strange question but i can't picture where you mean on the pump itself as i have just replaced the pump top seal and since there aren't many connections to go at it can only be one of three is it the small pipe that is connected to the injector bleed off or the actual fuel return pipe itself as when i fitted the top back together i actually bled the air from the bleed off union as i couldn't get the bleed bolt undone on the main feed union
I'M ALWAYS IN THE SH'T, IT'S ONLY THE DEPTH THAT VARIES!!!!!!!!

Ahhh. Yes, sorry the pressure is leaking from the small pipe that is on the same banjo as the injector bleed off. But the pipe seems to return to the tank. Cheers

Just spoken to a pump specialist and he says the fuel will always leak from this pipe back to ambient pressure and that it sounds like the front seal in the pump has gone letting air into the system. Nightmare!
