Hi, long time since scouring these pages, good to see everyone's still here. Wondering if any body can help.
I have a friends 1st Gen 2.4 at work with starting problems- it coughs and splutters and chucks out white diesel smelling smoke. Had injectors tested and all fine, then changed glow plugs, no change.
Turns out to be loosing fuel pressure within about 10 mins. If you re-pressurise with primer pump it starts fine and runs fine. Thought it could be primer pump, so disconnected engine side and pressurised system with coolant guage/pump- looses pressure quite quick.
Tracked it down to be blowing fuel/pressure back into tank via the return from pump.
Finally my question.......does anyone know the internal workings of pump as to whether this could be a simple o-ring or valve issue, if so can repair be done without removing pump as did the head and rad only a few months ago??? Cheers
