  • Head gasket gone today - any ideas?

Head gasket has gone on my 2.4td today!!!

Cooling system pressuerised took the rad cap of and it was like a volcanoe.

Taking the head off tomorrow to get it pressure tested and skimmed.

Any pointers or things to watch?

Also anything stupid that could pressuerise the system and make it over heat, (in know trying to kid myself)?

    Cheers,

Until you remove the head and check the gasket you have no way of knowing if it's blown. Chances are the head has cracked. The usual answer is to replace the rad cap, thermostat and check the radiator isn't blocked up with mud.

Label everything you disconnect and the pro's say leave the manifolds on until you get it on the bench. Make sure you keep the half moon insert from the rear of the head. Buy some new crush washers for the injectors.

It's nice to degrease and jetwash the engine before you start

Adam the head that is on the truck thats being brought down for me today should be ok.If you want to give me a ring then we can sort a price out on it if you want.If you give a hand to take it off then i'll knock a little more off for you.
I would sell the engine complete i got here like you asked about but unfortunately its going into the truck coming down today.

              ###### thing checked it all over today and run it for 2 hours and nothing wrong

Must of got low on water and boiled its self lucky i spotted the temp before it got too high and cooked itself.

Its always needed a touch of water every couple of weeks ,(god knows where it goes, bad rad filler design) but been so busy forgot for a while. looks like user error

Almost took the head off last night as well...

very very close, too close for comfort. Lucky thing is i nearly took the head straight off this morning without running it up again i was that sure it was the head gasket.

Thinking of putting a temp sender in the top rad hose so if the temp suddenly drops i know its getting low on water. Seem like a bad design where the hose and filler is only need to loose a small amount of water then it wont circulate.

                  cheers

The cooling system is a pressurised system, that's why it spat water out when you removed the radiator cap without allowing it to cool properly. Never, ever, do that again.

Does your pick up have a 2.4 ln130 engine? was just thinking that there may be a little split somewhere on the rad that's weeping water out ? or maybe the filler cap spring isn't maintaining pressure correctley?

                        Just guessing

Trust me I wont. I knew it was hot and the risk envolved so wrapped my whole arm in a rag, but wasnt expecting how much it would blow scared the crap out of me.

How much pressure is the rad cap ment to opperat at because it never did at all and the rad hoses felt as if there was concrete in them thats why i had to take the cap off as i thought a hose was about to blow.

Calos - sorry not update the side thing, have a 2.4td gen 2 now. See above about rad cap pressure...

Well my 2.4 has a button in the middle to release the pressure before opening, maybe it's not original and the reason your loosing water I'll take a quick pic of my'n neighbours will think I'm mad.
