Sorry Muncher, didn't mean that this thread is pointless, just couldn't understand where it was going.
Your right about peculiar failures in particular motors, and theres no doubt that the surf suffers from head failure(2nd Gen). Its just that having a survey doesn't really help anyone, a bit like having a list of recalled chassis numbers, its no guarantee.
At best the survey can help you decide which vehicle to buy or avoid but if like me you own a 92 2.4 its all too late and you live with the consequences.
