No Fuel

And so it starts (or maybe not). Completed my head swop today, no probs to shout about apart from the inlet sensor from another thread. However when it came to starting that was a whole new ballgame, cranks over fine and fast, but no go. Carried out usual checks, aha no fuel at number one injector with pipe off and cranking, aha no fuel from outlet on filter (tank full), aha no fuel from inlet pipe (is there an electric lift pump in tank). No probs prior to head swop. Can't bleed it if there is nothing there to bleed.

Had the same problem with an engine install last week. There is an earth wire that comes out of the wiring loom near the back of the engine, two brown wires with ring terminals by the egr valve. Make sure they are connected to the engine ok. Spent hours trying to get fuel out of mine, wouldn’t do anything till I connected them up.

If it's a 2.4 it's a manual lift pump. you need to crank the pipe and pump the to p of the filter till you get diesel there. then tighten up and spin the engine over till you get it to the injectors

have you used the lift pump on top of the filter. if you are pumping this and still getting no diesel through. Lift pumps knackered

I can't believe that you can drive a truck into your drive, change the head, and then find the lift pump is knackered. also I can't believe that there is no proper lift pump, ALL diesels have a mechanical or electrical lift pump to get fuel from tank to injector pump, perhaps I should go back to LR.

Doubtful but possible. Most likely explanation is that you've done something wrong.

Just thinking, how long have you cranked the engine for? It'll take a few minutes to re-prime the system. It'll have siphoned a lot of the fuel back to the tank when you let air in.

Also, filling the fuel filter with Diesel, ATF or injector cleaner will help.

I've changed a head on a 3.0l and in the end i had the truck batteries with jump leads to my truck and it took a good 10 to 15 mins before the truck fired up

lol, it could be a iffy primer pump, you might struggle to get fuel from empty, when its got fuel in the sysytem it'll be fine.

as others have said, pull the hose of the out side of the filter head and suck fuel up, then try again.

you DO have a lift pump, its on the top of the filter??????

I've have some older trucks that have taken literaly hours to splutter into life after empting the fuel pipes. As soon as they fire then you'd not there was ever anything wrong and they start instantly for ever after.

That nothing i only washed mine and the ECU packed up, £180 and a lot of swearing later.....vroom vroom

Right you blokes, thanks very much for all that, seems that its the "lift" pump the knacked (a primer in my opinion) and being a tight git I'm getting one from Richard. I have never seen a system like this for getting fuel to the injector pump, I'm quite impressed with the Surf in general but I think this bit is cheap and nasty (imo)

I bet it makes no difference.

It's only a primer pump, the injector pump is what draws the fuel. It's not a cheap and nasty system, it's a simple system that works. Putting an extra mechanical or electrical pump in the system is merely adding another failure point. But I suppose as a LR owner, you'll prefer it if there are more things to break?

The lift pump could have been knackered for ages, youve just never needed to use it
