Just had it into the garage.
He doesn't think the head had gone.
Recommends bleeding the heater matrix and just keeping an eye on it.
The hissing noise has disapeared and he recons the head would just go if it was going to due to the high pressures in a deisel engine.
He's a very good mechanic who I have used for a long time.
He does all the work to my other car which I wouldnt trust to anyone else.
I will bleed it at the weekend then run it for a week and see what happens.

Did you back flush the matrix? If the car has had 'radweld' or similar leak fix poured into the system, this sometimes clogs the heater matrix as the core is alot smaller than the main radiator.
If your losing water, check the thin metal pipes that run outside under the car to the rear heater matrix ,at the rear of the centre console, these corrode and leak.If they look dodgey, cut them and loop a rubber hose with two jubilee clips between them 'till you get others fitted.
The flap inside the car sometimes breaks too, meaning only cold air gets blown in ,,cable tie it open (from the passenger side footwell),then youlll have it at hot all the time.

Think we have decided that the heater matrix is stuffed and I have one on order. Thanks for the advise though but I think it is just past it.

Mine has been doing exactly the same for over two years now. I have tried everything. I can only put it down to some kind of blockage in the engine somewhere and the water not circulating properly causing it to blow water back out of the expansion tank:
Last Saturday 19th I pulled up on a car park and just as i pulled in, pure steam came from under the bonnet. When I looked the expansion tank cap had blown off releasing steam but there was also steam coming from the left side of the engine below the AC pump where the hissing noise comes from that I mentioned at the begining of this thread.
The AA chap came out, re-filled the system and followed me down to my local garage. It has not done this again since but the mechanic said all my problems stemmed from my heater matrix being stuffed (awaiting replacement in post). He thinks that the blockage in the matrix caused the system to pressurise and blow back through the Expansion tank.

Heater matrix aside. could the hissing/steam release from the left side be the dreaded cracked head problem. I cant see anything down there where the steam could have come from. I dont know what the symptoms of a cracked head are and I'm now worried that I may have a major expense on my hands.
Having said all that, I am still not experienceing any loss of coolant.

i am now driving around with a gallon of water everywhere i go just in case and I'm loosing confidence as to whether I should go any distance. The truck seems to perform fine every day but there is always that worrying niggle there at the back of my mind.
