  • Heater/Water loss

    Hi Guys.
Was posting an Item but I seem to have got timed out so my original posting may or may not appear somewhwere???.

Similar to Hawkwind my heater has stopped working.
    All valves/mechanicals/fans work ok.
Water in pipes ether side of matrix are reasonably warm.
Temp guage reads contant at just below half way.
There is no water in oil.
Threre is rusty water in expansion tank which is dry every 3 days or so.
There does not appear to be any leaks in the rad or water system.
When removing the pressure cap, water is full to top.
    I have replaced the stat.
There is no sign of water dripping onto floor. Inside or out.
When I switch off the engine I can hear a hissing sound just left of centre of engine but cant see any water leaking or rusty stains. The hissing is probably constant but cant be heard with engine running.
The rear heater is also blowing cold.

Can live with cold but worried I may have major water sytem failure while stuck on the M60/61 junction in the morning. I have been temporary unemployed and cant afford a major mechanical disaster. Have a temp job for five week for which I am travelling 60-70 mile per day so need to keep surf running.
    Any ideas anyone.

so apart from no heat in the cab, the cooling system appears to be working without fault?

No, it has faults. It's hissing and losing coolant.

Has the system been completely flushed and a new cap fitted? How do you know there are no combustion gases (indicative of a blown head/gasket)?

I read the hissing bit, but he also says its not loosing coolant. ???????

He also says it is losing coolant, how paradoxically strange.

            coolant

            Let me explain further.
The expansion tank is dry every 3 days, so I refill it.
When I remove the pressure cap next to the stat housing the coolant is full to the top but the expansion tank is dry.
It could be that the cooling system is pulling water from the expansion tank to replace coolant lost elsewhwere. Maybe if i left it for say 6 days I would notice coolant loss from both expansion tank and cooling system.
I dont know if there is a combustion gas leak but I dont seem to be experiencing any loss of power.

you could have the coolant tested at a garage, it might steer you in the right direction

Get the coolant checked for combustion gases, burp the cooling system and replace the cap with a genuine Toyota one.

Will do. I know A guy who will test the water for me and I will order a new cap.
What exactly do you mean by "burp" the system.

                      Hi,

Mine has been doing exactly the same for over two years now. I have tried everything. I can only put it down to some kind of blockage in the engine somewhere and the water not circulating properly causing it to blow water back out of the expansion tank. I top my water up every day and never had an overheating issue. Ive driven 5hrs to RTTS cornwall and done some pretty extream off road days. If you sort it out let me know, so long as you check the water every day and keep an eye on your temp guage you will be fine. Except for freezing

                        Cheers for that.
I will still get my water tested but at least i will feel better about driving to work even if it is freezing. Ive been taking a hot water bottle to work with me in the mornings.

Have checked slider control and inlet valve, all working fine.
Matrix is connected. Heater worked fine in summer and has got progressivley worse as the weather has turned colder. Can feel the faintest of warm air by the time I have travelled the 30 mile home. Matrix is probably airlocked as a result of low coolant level. Will try the "burp" method previously mentioned.
Not sure about the 12v heater, probably best to repair vehicle.

                              Cheap!

Hope it's just bleeding that needs doing and not the bleeding gasket/head.
I went through all that with a 306 pug, tried everything bled and burped about 15 times and each I drove somewhere and stopped, gurgle gurgle hissss coolent came out.
I took out the termostat and ran it with the header cap off and rag rammed into the hole for about a week before scrapping it.

                              peace
