If you set the pully mark to the pointer on the block this is wrong.
Remove the crank pully completly, clean off the face of the crank where the pully butts upto and you will see a small pimple on the crank, this should be set to the top dead position. If you look in the threads there are diagrams showing the correct positions Good Luck John
IT's not how you get in it . IT's how you get out.

If the truck is starting and running OK, the smoke may be the fuel you pumped into the exhaust, when it wouldn't start, burning off. Leave it a while, see if it clears.

Left it for about 20 mins but still smoking like a chimney. Could it be overfueling?

When I say a while, I mean a few weeks.

                What colour is the smoke?

I think it's white, because it was dark by the time I got it started.
As for leaving it a few weeks I can't drive it like it is because there is that much smoke nobody will be able to see the road because there's that much it fills the whole road.

Check it in the daylight! If it's white, and wasn't there before you did the work, the pump timing is out.

Over fuelling would create black, sooty smoke.

OK Guys I've stripped it down checked and re-checked the timming marks, and all's ok in that department, but it's still smoking which is light grey in colour, and keeps cutting out, and has no power.
So if there's anyone in the West London/Uxbridge area who knows about Surf's can have a look at it for me I would be greatful.
This is urgent as I need the car for work.
                          Many thanks in advance.
                          Dave Hob.

A lesson learned then? Don't touch what you don't understand.

I fear that unless you get a sympathetic bod from here to help you out, you'll be shelling out a fortune to have this fixed. The mechanic will need to work out what you did wrong, then fix it, rather than just fixing it if you'd went to them in the first place.
