Just ran it outside the house and turned the heater on - on hot - but cold
Suggestions please
1. Airlock in the system
2. No water in the system
3. Blockage in the heater pipes
4. Blockage in the heater matrix
5. Heater switch isn't moving, is blocked or broken.

Regarding my post of 7th June
Following my overheating problems 3 weeks into Surf ownership (see my previous post of 7th June), 5 weeks later and I now have my Surf back with a new head, new water pump, new (increased volume) radiator and complete engine unit overhaul.
The cost for the works exceeded £2K, (bills provided by the dealer complete with guarentee documentation). I had agreed prior to the works that upon collection of the vehicle I would contribute £500 to the costs as I had insisted on new parts and not a recon or bodge job that may not last and cannot be guarenteed.
I have just covered 280 miles on a round trip that took in 200 Motorway miles and severe B road hills in the extremly warm weather that we are enjoying without a problem.
When I bought the vehicle no written gaurentee was given, however whilst the dealer probably didn't make a loss on the vehicle sale, he was most accomodating when faced with the vehicles return in a sorry state 3 weeks later agreeing to correct the problems and with dialogue we acheived a suitable outcome. Win / Win as they say.To this end I am pleased that my Surf is now back on the road carrying out its duties seemingly without problems.
Is a post available to recomend dealers? as I suppose I could give him some free advertising.

back on the road
Got surf back on road with new head, cam belt, radiator, head bolts you name it its had it. Old head was cracked between every valve. I was lucky enough only to have to pay £300 labour at a garage I use quite often. Just need to get a new bash plate for the underneath. Met a few people with surfs bought from the same garage all having the same problems, with no help from owner I would recommend you stay away from REDHOUSE GARAGE IN WARE HERTFORD.

I dont know but my last car a subaru legacy with the dreaded 4cam 2.5 head had the water sound, the cars head was gone and the sound was airlocks in the system all i had to do was check the overflow bottle with some testing liquid and all my fears were realised .
Hope this isnt the same for you but i would check anyway heres hoping its something minor

cooling problems
with reference to your comment reguarding the sound of water rushing round your engine. look firstly at the heater matrix as they have a tendency to block as do rads and all cooling components on the 2.4 surf. i have recently had the same problem starting with no hot air at all. turned out to be a blocked rad or blocked matrix. rad tested and found to be blocked 200 quid later and a new rad installed. Then with the increased water flow around the engine the blocked matrix became apparent giving the gurgling sounds as you describe. unfortunatly did not get the time to replace matrix because the system preasurised and overheated with you've guessed it a cracked cylinder head being the problem. two jobs to do. oh what fun.

the sound water rushing through the heater just means the coolant is displacing air i.e. there is air in there as well, try some of the various tips for eliminating air whilst filling the cooling system, too many to list, so you'll have to do a forum search.Simon '91 2.4td ssr-x

Maybe your matrix dried out while it was in the garage. Maybe they left the system drained down for a few days. That was enough to kybosh a matrix on a passat I own, up to flushing it out I never had a problem with the matrix. I just left it too long between starting and finishing the job.
