  • steering wheel problem

hello all! got into a bit of bother with trying to put the orginal steering wheel back on to the surf. the pic shows what i assume is an extension piece from the steering shaft to fix the 'nice wooden' steering wheel to.
questio for the audiance is if anyone has taken the original wheel off and put this extension piece on how do you get if off
( i have unscrewed the nut off the shaft)

    thanks

You need a gear puller... or a f'in big hammer! depends who you ask!

But basically its a tapered spline. So it gets daaamn tight as you do it up.

a gear puller takes about 3-4 seconds to remove it an doesn't damage anything.

The above would be the preferred method, but if you haven't already tried, you could try putting the old wheel back onto the boss (extension piece) an try using that to pull it off. Mine came off with some successive quick hard pulls. The old wheel was heading for the back of a cupboard so i wasn,t too bothered if it got damaged, it didn't though. I would suggest also that if you do try this that you put the nut back on for a couple of turns just in case it comes off all of a sudden.

        thanks for the info!

is the gear puller a standard tool that works with all types of car or is a special toyota tool? (that being the operative word!) i assume then it is a garage job? or can you buy the gear puller on EEEEEEEEEEbay

There just a random tool. Use them on anything that needs pulling off..

Cheap too.. if you chucked the other 2 back on ebay or flogged them on here it would cost you a couple of quid for one.
