  • BIGGG Drop in MPG Help

OK I've cruised the forums but I'm hoping someone somewhere can point me in the right direction here.

My 93 Surf was consistenly returning around 20/22 mpg for months. All usual servicing done i.e fuel filter, air filter and oil change all done about 2 months ago and everything as it should be.

Now over the last 2 weeks or so the mpg is down to about 15. There is no power difference and no smoke and it's doing the same type of motoring every day.

There appears to be no leaks as I've been under and over it with a tooth comb. The only thing I've noticed over the last month of really cold weather is that it's a bit smokier on start up but is sweet as a nut after 30 seconds or so. So, anyone got a clue as to where else to look.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Could be dribbling injectors? Does it take a wee while longer than normal to start?
Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

            How do you know?

Anyway, if it's not leaking or dribbling, it must be overfuelling. You said all filters have been done. Maybe a MAF problem?

I followed all the advice on the forums to drive at a set speed and press the button etc, etc, This makes no difference to when any gear change is made and absolutely no difference to acceleration.

As to MAF I have no idea what you're talking about !!

Incidentally if it is leaking/dribbling slightly what are the signs ?

could possibly be due to something like one of the brakes sticking causing drag.or a drive line problem.

Check the leak off pipe, the flexi pipe that returns fuel to the
injector pump, (from the injectors). Run the car fast, and stop
at a safe place, lift the bonnet, does it smell of diesel? (Yes?) look
at the seals on the inj pump. (No?) look for line leaks, look for tank
                    leaks. (remove the tank guard)

                    Hope this helps.

If it aint broke, keep goin' till it is.

Mass air flow sensor. There's info on checking those sensors up here somewhere:
